Gold Cup At Greyville
The Gold Cup is a Grade 3 thoroughbred horse race run over 3200m at Greyville Racecourse in Durban, South Africa. The first running of the race took place in 1920 however it was not run in 1942. The race is considered "Africa’s premier marathon for long-distance runners." The race historically takes place on the last weekend of July, which coincides with the end of the racing season. This was previously a Grade 1 race, until it was downgraded to a Grade 2 in 2016, and then Grade 3 in 2017. Most Winners Jockey Felix Coetzee has won the most Gold Cups with 8. He equalled Charlie Barends record of 7 winners in 1998, before breaking it in 2012. Past winners Sponsors The race is sponsored by Marshalls World of Sport since the 2021 running of the Gold Cup. It is subsequently now called the Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup. The Thoroughbred is a horse breed best known for its use in horse racing. Although the word ''thoroughbred'' is sometimes used to refer to any breed of purebred horse, it technically refers only to the Thoroughbred breed. Greyville Racecourse
Greyville Racecourse is a Thoroughbred horse race track in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The 2,800 metre pear-shaped turf track consists of several gradient features: it is run uphill from the 2,400 metre mark to the 1,800 metre mark, after which it slopes gently downward for approximately the next 800 metres then uphill again into the nearly flat 500 metre homestretch. A 2,000 metre all-weather "Polytrack" was constructed inside the existing turf track in 2014 with the first races held in June that year. The track's infield holds the Royal Durban Golf Club's Championship golf course. Greyville Racecourse is host to the prestigious Durban July Handicap and in August, the Greyville Gold Cup, both Group One races that annually draw the best horses from around the country. Weichong C. Marwing (born 14 March 1970 in South Africa) is a Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Based in South Africa, he has won a number of important international Group One races. Mike de Kock (born February 14, 1964) is a South African racehorse trainer. He currently holds the South African record for most Grade 1 wins by a trainer with 133. He has trained over 3,400 winners who have won in South Africa, UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom and the USA. De Kock has been champion trainer 8 times. Kevin Shea (jockey)
Kevin Shea (born 16 April 1964) is a former South African horse racing jockey. He was a former stable jockey for trainer Mike de Kock, and rode 26 Grade 1 winners for the trainer. His career lasted 37 years, before retiring in 2015 after experiencing chronic back problems. He is currently an on-course presenter for Gold Circle TV which covers horse racing in KwaZulu-Natal.
