Gold Cup (rugby Union)
The Gold Cup is the premier rugby union club competition in South Africa for non-university teams. The competition was launched as the SARU Community Cup in 2013 to replace the existing SARU National Club Championships and renamed to the Gold Cup for 2016, when teams from Namibia and Zimbabwe were also included in the competition. History On 20 September 2012, the South African Rugby Union announced the launch of the SARU Community Cup to replace the National Club Championships. Several rugby union clubs in South Africa are affiliated to universities, which already competed in the annual Varsity Rugby tournaments. Rugby World Cup
The Rugby World Cup is a men's rugby union tournament contested every four years between the top international teams. The tournament is administered by World Rugby, the sport's international governing body. The winners are awarded the Webb Ellis Cup, named after William Webb Ellis, who according to a popular legend, invented rugby by picking up the ball during a football game. Villagers Worcester Rugby Football Club is an amateur rugby union club based in Worcester, South Africa. They are a member of the Boland Rugby Union and can provide players to the provincial team and the URC Rugby team. Origins The club was founded in 1883 in Worcester and is one of the oldest rugby clubs in South Africa and the oldest from a formerly disadvantaged community. The Quins-Bobbies Rugby Club – also referred to as QBR – are a South African rugby union team, formed in 2017 following the merger of Pretoria Harlequins and Pretoria Police rugby clubs. Hamilton RFC, Sea Point
Hamilton Rugby Football Club was founded in March 1875 in Cape Town, and states that it is the oldest rugby union club in South Africa. Hamilton RFC played in the first official match at Newlands Stadium on 31 May 1890. Origins The club's inception occurred when a Mr. W. Nightingale called together a meeting of football enthusiasts at the offices of Messrs. Hamilton Ross & Co. The 2017 Gold Cup was the second season of the Gold Cup competition since its name change, having previously been known as the Community Cup. The competition was the top competition for non-university rugby union clubs in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. The 2017 competition retained the same timeslot as the 2016 edition, taking place between 9 September and 29 October 2017. Competition rules and information The format of the Gold Cup was the same as the Rugby World Cup. The teams were divided into four pools, each containing five teams. Each team played four pool games, facing all the other teams in their pools once, with two of those matches being home games and two being away games. The 2016 Gold Cup was the fourth season of the Gold Cup competition, but the first season that it was known as the Gold Cup, having previously been known as the Community Cup. While previous editions of the competition were held over the Easter weekend, the 2016 tournament took place later in the year, with the matches in the competition taking place between 10 September and 29 October 2016. Also, the champion clubs from Namibia and Zimbabwe took part in the competition for the first time.
