Gold(V) Fluoride
Gold(V) fluoride is the inorganic compound with the formula Au2F10. This fluoride compound features gold in its highest known oxidation state. This red solid dissolves in hydrogen fluoride but these solutions decompose, liberating fluorine. The structure of gold(V) fluoride in the solid state is centrosymmetric with hexacoordinated gold and an octahedral arrangement of the fluoride centers on each gold center. It is the only known dimeric pentafluoride, although sulfur can form disulfur decafluoride; other pentafluorides are monomeric ( P, As, Sb, Cl, Br, I), tetrameric ( Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Tc, Re, Ru, Os, Rh, Ir, Pt), or polymeric ( Bi, V, U). In the gas phase, a mixture of dimer and trimer in the ratio 82:18 has been observed. Gold pentafluoride is the strongest known fluoride ion acceptor, exceeding the acceptor tendency of even antimony pentafluoride. Synthesis Gold(V) fluoride can be synthesized by heating gold metal in an atmosphere of oxygen and fluorine ... Tantalum Pentafluoride
Tantalum(V) fluoride is the inorganic compound with the formula TaF5. It is one of the principal molecular compounds of tantalum. Characteristic of some other pentafluorides, the compound is volatile but exists as an oligomer in the solid state. Preparation and structure It is prepared by treating tantalum metal with fluorine gas. NbF5 is prepared similarly. Solid and molten TaF5 is tetrameric, consisting of four TaF6 centers linked via bridging fluoride centers. Gaseous TaF5 adopts the trigonal pyramidal structure with D3h symmetry. Reactions and derivatives The tendency of TaF5 to form clusters in the solid state indicates the Lewis acidity of the monomer. Indeed, TaF5 reacts with fluoride sources to give the ions , , and . With neutral Lewis bases, such as diethyl ether TaF5 forms adducts. is used in combination with HF as a catalyst for the alkylation of alkanes and alkenes and for the protonation of aromatic In chemistry, aromaticity is a chemical property ... Uranium Pentafluoride
Uranium pentafluoride is the inorganic compound with the chemical formula UF5. It is a pale yellow paramagnetic solid. The compound has attracted interest because it is related to uranium hexafluoride, which is widely used to produce uranium fuel. It crystallizes in two polymorphs, called α- and β-UF5. Synthesis and structure Uranium pentafluoride is an intermediate in the conversion of uranium tetrafluoride to volatile UF6: :2UF4 + F2 → 2UF5 :2UF5 + F2 → 2UF6 It can be produced by reduction of the hexafluoride with carbon monoxide at elevated temperatures. : 2UF6 + CO → 2UF5 + COF2 Other reducing agents have been examined. The α form is a linear coordination polymer consisting of chains of octahedral uranium centers in which one of the five fluoride anion forms a bridge to the next uranium atom. The structure is reminiscent of that for vanadium pentafluoride. In the β form, the uranium centers adopt a square antiprismatic structure. The β polymorp ... Rhodium Pentafluoride
Rhodium pentafluoride is an inorganic compound with the formula Rh4F20. It is a red solid. It is prepared by fluorination of rhodium trifluoride at 400 °C. According to X-ray crystallography, the Rh centers are octahedral. The structure is very similar to that of the related ruthenium pentafluoride, osmium pentafluoride, and iridium pentafluoride. All are tetrameric, meaning that they have the molecular structure [MF5]4. The M-F distances for the bridging ligand, bridging fluoride ligands are typically about 0.2 Å longer than the Rh-F distances for the nonbridging fluoride ligands. In the case of rhodium pentafluoride, these distances average 1.999(4) and 1.808(8) Å. The Rh-F-Rh angles average 135°, which leads to a ruffled structure. In contrast, the M-F-M centers are linear in the pentafluorides of niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten.
