Goedereede
Goedereede () is a little town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality had a population of about 11,000 in 2010. It consisted of the west part of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. Goedereede merged with Dirksland, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee on January 1, 2013. The town have a population of about 2,000 in 2012. Goedereede received city rights in 1312 from Sir Gereart van Voorne. The future Pope Adrian VI (1459–1523) was at one time pastor of the parish church of Goedereede. During a great fire in Goedereede in 1482 the old "Katharina Church" and its tower were destroyed. A new church was erected in 1512 beside the Toren van Goedereede (Goederede Tower), which still stands today. Goederede went into a long decline, losing trade to better-sited ports. Toren Van Goedereede
The Toren van Goedereede (;In isolation, ''Toren'' and ''van'' are pronounced and , respectively. Goederede Tower) is a gray square brick tower in Goedereede, Netherlands, high, belonging to the Catharina church. It was built in 1512. From 1552 to 1912 the tower served as a lighthouse, and went through various changes during this period. Today it has been restored and is a museum, housing a carillon. Church tower The original tower was part of a large parish church in the then-prosperous fishing and trading port. Adriaan Florenszoon Boeyens (1459–1523), the future Pope Adrian VI, was pastor of the church. During a great fire in Goedereede in 1482 the old "Katharina Church" and its tower were destroyed. Goeree-Overflakkee
Goeree-Overflakkee () is the southernmost delta island of the province of South Holland, Netherlands. It is separated from Voorne-Putten and Hoeksche Waard by the Haringvliet, from the mainland of North Brabant by the Volkerak, and from Schouwen-Duiveland by Lake Grevelingen. Since 2013, Goeree-Overflakkee has also been a municipality, consisting from west to east of the former municipalities of Goedereede, Dirksland, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee. The largest towns are Sommelsdijk, Middelharnis, Ouddorp, and Dirksland. Despite being part of the province of South Holland, the island's scenery and dialect are more closely related to Zeeland than to Holland. Ouddorp
Ouddorp is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. It is often referred to as ''Ouddorp aan Zee'' (Outdorp on the Sea) to promote itself as a seaside resort, because the village has an long beach which is the longest of the Netherlands. History The village was first mentioned in 1551 as "Outdorp in Westvoirne", and means "old village". Old refers to land which has not been reclaimed by ''poldering''. Ouddorp is a circular village around a church which developed in the Middle Ages. It used to be the centre of the former island of Goeree, but was overshadowed by Goedereede. South of Ouddorp is a ''terp'' (artificial hill) on which Spreeuwenberg Castle was built in the 13th century, but only the hill remained. The Dutch Reformed church has a free standing tower. Oostdijk is a hamlet in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 13 km west of Hellevoetsluis. It was first mentioned in 1515 as "gelegen in Westvoirne bijder Goederee inder banne vanden oestdijck", and means "eastern dike". It is named after the eponymous polder. Stellendam
Stellendam is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 9 km west of Hellevoetsluis. History The village was first mentioned around 1750 as "'t Stelle Gors". The current name is a combination of "dam" and "small ''terp''s on a shoal which shepherds to use in case of floods". The dam refers to the Statendam which was constructed in 1751. Stellendam developed after the dam was built. In 1780, the Eendrachtspolder was enclosed by a dike, and shortly after a courthouse was constructed in Stellendam. The Dutch Reformed church is a simple aisleless church with ridge turret which was built in 1819. The inn 't Wapen van Stellendam was built between 1781 and 1782 as court house and inn. Dirksland
Dirksland () is a village and former municipality on Goeree-Overflakkee Island in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality had a population of about 8,000 in 2007, and covered an area of about 74 km² of which about 19 km² was water. The former municipality of Dirksland also included the communities of Herkingen, and Melissant. On 1 January 2013, Dirksland merged with Goedereede, Middelharnis, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. The North Sea flood of 1953 did not have as much of a destructive effect on Dirksland as the rest of the island, because Dirksland is somewhat higher. Middelharnis
Middelharnis () is a town and former municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland, on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee. The town had a population of about 6,800 in 2012. On 1 January 2013, Middelharnis merged with Goedereede, Dirksland, and Oostflakkee into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. History The village was first mentioned in 1466 as "die Middelharnisse". The etymology is disputed. Middelharnis developed after a dike was built around the Oudeland ''polder'' in 1465. Oostflakkee
Oostflakkee () is a former municipality on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The former municipality covered an area of about 107 km² (of which about 33 km² was covered by water), and had a population of about 10,000 in 2007. On January 1, 2013, Oostflakkee merged with Goedereede, Dirksland, and Middelharnis into the new municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. The former municipality of Oostflakkee was formed by the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Den Bommel, Ooltgensplaat, and Oude Tonge in 1966. It consisted of the communities of Achthuizen, Langstraat, Den Bommel (with Zuidzijde), Ooltgensplaat, Oude-Tonge, and Zuidzijde. Havenhoofd
Havenhoofd is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 10 km west of Hellevoetsluis. The village was first mentioned around 1750 as "'t Goereese Hooft", and refers to the dams on either side of the harbour. During the 18th century, Havenhoofd developed as a harbour village for Goedereede. In 1943, during World War II, the entire village was demolished as part of the Atlantic Wall, and 42 bunkers were built in the area. Some of the bunkers are still hidden under the sand of the dunes. Havenhoofd was rebuilt between 1947 and 1949.
