''Godroniopsis'' is a genus of fungi in the family Helotiaceae. The genus contains two species. The genus name of ''Godroniopsis'' is in honour of Dominique Alexandre Godron (1807–1880), who was a French physician, botanist, geologist and speleologist. The Helotiaceae are a family of fungi in the order Helotiales. The distribution of species in the family are widespread, and typically found in tropical areas. There are 117 genera and 826 species in the family. A question mark after the genus name means that according to the 2007 Outline of Ascomycota, the placement of that genus in this family is uncertain. Dominique Alexandre Godron
Dominique Alexandre Godron (25 March 1807 - 16 August 1880) was a French physician, botanist, geologist and speleologist born in the town of Hayange, in the ''département'' Moselle. Godron studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg, and during his career distinguished himself in natural sciences as well as in the field of medicine. In 1854 he became dean and professor of natural history to the Faculty of Sciences at Nancy. Here he established a natural history museum and reorganized its botanical garden (now the '' Jardin Dominique Alexandre Godron'', renamed in his honor). Among his numerous writings were a publication on the flora of the Lorraine region of France called "''Flore de Lorraine''" (1843), and the three-volume "''Flore de France''", a work on flora native to France and Corsica that was co-written with botanist Jean Charles Marie Grenier (1808-1875). Circumscription (taxonomy)
In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. If we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in Genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in Genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus. A goal of biological taxonomy is to achieve a stable circumscription for every taxon. William Webster Diehl
William Webster Diehl (January 15, 1891 – 1978) was an American mycologist recognized for his work on grass pathogens, particularly in the genus ''Balansia''. Diehl was born in on January 15, 1891 in Logansport, Indiana to parents Edwin Randall Diehl and Mary Delilah Wyrick Diehl. The family moved to Ohio shortly after his birth and he attended grammar school in Dayton. He attended Miami University from 1910–1914 and received an MSc in botany from Iowa State College in 1915. He was briefly an instructor of botany and plant pathology with Clemson before joining the USDA where he worked from 1928 until his retirement in 1958. Edith Katherine Cash (October 14, 1890 – April 6, 1992) was an American Mycology, mycologist and Lichenology, lichenologist. Early life Edith Cash was born in Binghamton, New York, to John Ferris Cash and Adella Knapp Cash. She graduated from George Washington University in 1912 with an AB degree in history and languages and was the recipient of the Thomas F. Walsh undergraduate prize for academic excellence. She was knowledgeable about European literature, and according to the catalog from George Washington University, her major was in French with a minor in French and English. She studied as an assistant only one-night weekly during six months (October 1921 to May 1922) to obtain her formal mycology training, at the Graduate School USA, USDA Graduate School.
