God Speed You! Black Emperor
is a 1976 Japanese black-and-white 16 mm film, 16 mm documentary film by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi that follows the exploits of young Japanese motorcyclists known as the "Black Emperors". The 1970s in Japan saw the rise of a motorcycling movement called the ''bōsōzoku'', which drew the interest of the media. The movie follows a member of the "Black Emperors" motorcycle club and his interaction with his parents after he gets in trouble with the police. The Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor took their name from the film. Mitsuo Yanagimachi
is a Japanese screenwriter and film director. Career Born in Namegata District, Ibaraki, Yanagimachi attended the Faculty of Law at Waseda University but began studying filmmaking. Working as a freelance assistant director after graduating, he started his own production company in 1974 and produced the documentary film ''God Speed You! Black Emperor'' (1976) about bōsōzoku. He made his fiction film debut in 1979 with ''Jūkyūsai no Chizu''. That and the later ''Fire Festival (film), Himatsuri'' were based on novels by Kenji Nakagami. His 1982 work ''Farewell to the Land, Saraba Itoshiki Daichi'' showed in the Competition at the Berlin Film Festival. His films have often focused on youth (''Who's Camus Anyway?''), on ethnic minorities in Japan (''Ai ni Tsuite, Tokyo''), as well as on Asia (''Shadow of China'' and the documentary ''Tabisuru Pao-jiang-hu''). Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (sometimes abbreviated to GY!BE or Godspeed) is a Canadian post-rock band which originated in Montreal, Quebec in 1994. The group releases recordings through Constellation, an independent record label also located in Montreal. After the release of their debut album in 1997, the group toured regularly from 1998 to 2003. Their second album, 2000's ''Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven'', received critical acclaim and has been named as one of the best albums of the decade. In 2003, the band announced an indefinite hiatus in order for members to pursue other musical interests. In the intervening period, the group was occasionally rumored to have broken up, but finally reconvened for a tour which began in late 2010.
