Goa Police
The Goa Police is the law enforcement agency for the state of Goa in India. Organisational structure The Goa Police operates under direct control of the Department of Home Affairs, Government of Goa. It is headed by the Director General of Police (DGP), Shri Jaspal Singh. History The Goa Police was established in 1966 after the transfer of authority over Goa from the Indian military administration to the civil administration. It replaced the former Portuguese administration's ''Polícia do Estado da Índia'' (State of India Police), disbanded after the annexation of Goa by India in 1961. Panaji (; also known as Panjim) is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of North Goa district. Previously, it was the territorial capital of the former Portuguese India. It lies on the banks of the Mandovi river estuary in the Tiswadi sub-district ''(tehsil)''. Director general of police (DGP) is a rank in the Indian Police Service, held by the highest ranking police officer in a State or a Union Territory of India, typically heading the state or the UT police force. The Annexation of Goa was the process in which the Republic of India annexed ', the then Portuguese Indian territories of Goa, Daman and Diu, starting with the armed action carried out by the Indian Armed Forces in December 1961.
