GO!GO!7188 (Go Go Nana Ichi Hachi Hachi), also known simply as Gogo, was a Japanese rock band with influences spanning from surf rock to punk rock to enka. History In June 1998, Yumi Nakashima (nicknamed Yuu) and Akiko Hamada (nicknamed Akko), both alumnae of the same year at Shoyo High School in Kagoshima of Kyūshū, formed a band composed of girls, which was the forerunner of GO!GO!7188. When the band broke up in 1999, Yu and Akko formed GO!GO!7188 to participate in the ''Teen's Music Festival'', sponsored by Yamaha. They didn't win the grand prize, but they signed to the talent agencbreast/milia Turkey then joined GoGo as a drummer, and the band then signed with major label Capitol Music (Toshiba-EMI). They went to Tokyo in February, 2000, and released their first single "Taiyō" on June 28. On October 13, 2003, Akko released her solo album ''Kirari'' under the name of Akiko Hamada. , best known as Akko, was the bassist, back-up vocalist, and lyricist of GO!GO!7188. She has also released two solo albums under her maiden name . She sings, writes lyrics, and composes music. In GO!GO!7188, she seemed to be the most outspoken member; she did most of the talking during their interviews and live shows. History While in high school she met Yuu, who formed ''Jellyfish'', a JUDY AND MARY cover band made-up of five girls including Akiko. When ''Jellyfish'' broke up a few years later, Yuu and Akiko would remain together and in 1998 form the rock band GO!GO!7188. Although Yuu is the lead vocalist of the group, her style of performance is somewhat reserved. This goes in sharp contrast to Akiko's energetic dancing and bass playing, making Akiko the most visible personality during the live performances despite their drummer, Turkey, garnering the label of "leader."
