__NOTOC__ Gmina Żagań is a rural gmina (administrative district) in Żagań County, Lubusz Voivodeship, in western Poland. Its seat is the town of Żagań, although the town is not part of the territory of the gmina. The gmina covers an area of , and as of 2019 its total population is 7,324. Gmina
The gmina (Polish: , plural ''gminy'' , from German ''Gemeinde'' meaning ''commune'') is the principal unit of the administrative division of Poland, similar to a municipality. , there were 2,477 gminas throughout the country, encompassing over 43,000 villages. 940 gminas include cities and towns, with 302 among them constituting an independent urban gmina ( pl, gmina miejska) consisting solely of a standalone town or one of the 107 cities, the latter governed by a city mayor (''prezydent miasta''). The gmina has been the basic unit of territorial division in Poland since 1974, when it replaced the smaller gromada (cluster). Stary Żagań
Stary Żagań (german: Alt Sagan) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Żagań, within Żagań County, Lubusz Voivodeship, in western Poland. It lies approximately north of Żagań and south of Zielona Góra. The village has a population of 180. History The village dates back to the Middle Ages. It was initially called ''Żagań'', before the town of Żagań was established nearby by Polish monarch Bolesław IV the Curly in the 12th century. The village was named Stary Żagań ("Old Żagań") since. In 1284 it was mentioned in medieval documents under the Latin name ''Antiqus Zagan''. The local church of Our Lady Queen of Poland dates back to the 12th century.
