Gmina Kartuzy
__NOTOC__ Gmina Kartuzy is an urban-rural gmina (administrative district) in Kartuzy County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. Its seat is the town of Kartuzy, which lies approximately west of the regional capital Gdańsk. The gmina covers an area of , and as of 2006 its total population is 31,100 (out of which the population of Kartuzy amounts to 15,263, and the population of the rural part of the gmina is 15,837). The gmina contains part of the protected area called Kashubian Landscape Park. Gmina
The gmina (Polish: , plural ''gminy'' , from German ''Gemeinde'' meaning ''commune'') is the principal unit of the administrative division of Poland, similar to a municipality. , there were 2,477 gminas throughout the country, encompassing over 43,000 villages. 940 gminas include cities and towns, with 302 among them constituting an independent urban gmina ( pl, gmina miejska) consisting solely of a standalone town or one of the 107 cities, the latter governed by a city mayor (''prezydent miasta''). The gmina has been the basic unit of territorial division in Poland since 1974, when it replaced the smaller gromada (cluster). Three or more gminas make up a higher level unit called powiat, except for those holding the status of a city with powiat rights. Kaliska ( csb, Kalëska) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Kartuzy, within Kartuzy County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, in northern Poland. It lies approximately east of Kartuzy and west of the regional capital Gdańsk. It is located within the ethnocultural region of Kashubia in the historic region of Pomerania. The village has a population of 220. During the German occupation of Poland (World War II), the Kaliska forest was the site of large massacres of Poles, carried out by the Germans from September to November 1939 as part of the ''Intelligenzaktion''.
