Glounthaune, County Cork
Glounthaune () is a village in County Cork, Ireland, some east of Cork city, on the north shore of Cork Harbour, the estuary of the River Lee. Transport The village was originally a planned town built in 1810 on a tidal quay wall and named at that time "New Glanmire". It is served by the commuter railway line between Cork and Cóbh. The next station in the Cork direction is Little Island, while towards Cóbh the next stop is at Fota Island. With the reopening, in 2009, of the railway line to Midleton, Glounthaune railway station became the junction between the Cóbh and Midleton lines. Sport The parish of Glounthaune is the main base for Gaelic Athletic Association club Erin's Own GAA. Erin's Own won the Cork Senior Hurling Championship on three occasions: in 1992, 2006 (defeating Cloyne) and 2007 (defeating Newtownshandrum). Midleton (; , meaning "monastery at the weir") is a town in south-eastern County Cork, Ireland. It lies approximately 16 km east of Cork City on the Owenacurra River and the N25 road, which connects Cork to the port of Rosslare. A satellite town of Cork City, Midleton is part of Metropolitan Cork. It is the central hub of business for the East Cork Area. Midleton is within the Cork East Dáil constituency. Denzil Lacey is an Irish composer, employed by SiriusXM. Radio stations he has worked at since 2006 include 98FM, East Coast FM, Dublin's Country Mix 106.8, Dublin City FM, RTÉ 2fm and most recently, FM104. Early life Lacey was born in Dublin, Ireland and grew up in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland. He attended primary school in Glounthaune, Cork and secondary school in Presentation College, Bray. Tomás O'Leary
Tomás O'Leary (born 22 October 1983) is an Irish former rugby union player who played as a scrum-half. O'Leary played most of his career in the United Rugby Championship with Munster, where he was part of the team that won the Heineken Cup in 2006 and again in 2008. He also played in the English Premiership with London Irish, and the Top 14 with Montpellier. Internationally, he represented Ireland, where he was a member of the team that won the 2009 Six Nations Championship and Grand Slam. Brian Corcoran
Brian Corcoran (born 23 March 1973) is an Irish former hurler and Gaelic footballer who played as a centre-back and as a full-forward for the Cork senior teams. Born in Glounthaune, County Cork, Corcoran first played competitive Gaelic games whilst at school at Midleton CBS Secondary School. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of fifteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor teams as a dual player, before later joining the under-21 sides. He made his senior debut during the 1991-92 National Hurling League. Corcoran went on to play a key part for Cork as both a hurler and as a footballer, and won three All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals and two National Hurling League medals. Cathal Coughlan (singer)
Cathal Coughlan (16 December 1960 – 18 May 2022) was an Irish singer and songwriter from Cork, best known as the frontman of the band Microdisney, formed with Sean O'Hagan in 1980. Their second album ''The Clock Comes Down the Stairs'' reached number one in the UK Indie Chart. They developed cult followings in the Irish and UK indie music scenes before breaking up in 1988. Coughlan went on to lead the harder-edged The Fatima Mansions, who found critical success with their aggressive live shows and five consistent albums, but broke up in 1995. Theobald Mathew (temperance Reformer)
Theobald Mathew (10 October 1790 – 8 December 1856) was an Irish Catholic priest and teetotalist reformer, popularly known as Father Mathew. He was born at Thomastown, near Golden, County Tipperary, on 10 October 1790, to James Mathew and his wife Anne, daughter of George Whyte, of Cappaghwhyte. Of the family of the Earls Landaff (his father, James, was first cousin of Thomas Mathew, father of the first earl), he was a kinsman of the clergyman Arnold Mathew. He received his schooling in Kilkenny, then moved for a short time to Maynooth. From 1808 to 1814 he studied in Dublin, where in the latter year he was ordained to the priesthood. Erin's Own GAA (Cork)
Erin's Own GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Glounthaune in east County Cork, Ireland. The club is made up of players from Little Island, Knockraha, Brooklodge and Glounthaune areas of the parish. The club caters for players at all age levels in hurling, Gaelic football, camogie and ladies football. The club plays in the Imokilly division of Cork GAA. History Erin's Own GAA Club was founded in 1963 with the amalgamation of the two parish clubs, Knockraha and Little Island. The decision to form the new club was based on a desire to strengthen Gaelic games in the parish of Glounthaune by forming one strong unit where two weaker ones previously existed.
