Gloria Nord
Gloria Nord (August 2, 1922 – December 30, 2009), born Gloria Nordskog, was an American roller skater, ice skater and pin-up girl who became known as "Sonja Henie on wheels," and "the Sonja Henie of the roller rinks." Nord was reportedly "adored by millions in the 1940s and 1950s for her balletic finesse and theatrical flamboyance." Biography Nord grew up in Santa Monica and Hollywood, California. Nord was the youngest of five children of Andre Nordskog, a noted concert singer. Nord studied dance and, at age 15, she was an established child entertainer. She attended Miss Long's Professional School, a school for stage kids in Hollywood. A pin-up model (known as a pin-up girl for a female and less commonly male pin-up for a male) is a model whose mass-produced pictures see widespread appeal as part of popular culture. Pin-up models were variously glamour models, fashion models, or actresses whose pictures were intended for informal display, i.e. meant to be "''pinned-up''" on a wall, which is the basis for the etymology of the phrase. These pictures are also sometimes known as cheesecake photos. Sonja Henie (8 April 1912 – 12 October 1969) was a Norway, Norwegian figure skating, figure skater and film star. Sidney Patrick Grauman (March 17, 1879 – March 5, 1950) was an American showman who created two of Hollywood's most recognizable and visited landmarks, the Chinese Theatre and the Egyptian Theatre. Biography Early years Grauman was the son of David Grauman (18??–1921) and Rosa Goldsmith (1853–1936). Grauman's parents were theatrical performers on show circuits. They were both Jewish. Grauman and his father went to Dawson City, Yukon, for the Gold Rush when he was a young man. He worked there as a paperboy. Since newspapers were scarce, they could command a dollar each. A Royal Command Performance is any performance by actors or musicians that occurs at the direction or request of a reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.
