'' American Horror Story: Freak Show'' is the fourth season of the FX horror anthology series ''American Horror Story''. The season is set in 1952 Jupiter, Florida, and centers around a freak show run by aspiring German actress and singer Elsa Mars. The season's theme, discrimination, is underlined by depictions of physical and mental abuse towards “freaks” and their struggle to survive economically. Veteran cast members include Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Denis O'Hare, and Frances Conroy, with Michael Chiklis and Finn Wittrock making their debuts. A freak show, also known as a creep show, is an exhibition of biological rarities, referred to in popular culture as "freaks of nature". Typical features would be physically unusual humans, such as those uncommonly large or small, those with intersex variations, those with extraordinary diseases and conditions, and others with performances expected to be shocking to viewers. Heavily tattooed or pierced people have sometimes been seen in freak shows (more common in modern times as a sideshow act), as have attention-getting physical performers such as fire-eating and sword-swallowing acts.
