Gloria (Irish Singer)
Gloria Smyth (born May 1951), better known as Gloria, is an Irish singer from Navan, County Meath. She rose to fame in Ireland during the 1970s with " One Day at a Time" which spent longer in the Irish charts than any other single to date (90 weeks). She later toured under her married name of Gloria Sherry. Career The eldest of nine children, Gloria's father, Jimmy, was the leader of the Arcadians Showband. Her first experience on stage was at the age of 10 when she danced and played accordion with her father's showband. After leaving school, she found work playing piano with another band, before joining the Maurice Lynch Showband as a singer in the late 1960s. Navan
Navan ( ; , meaning "the Cave") is the county town of County Meath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. In 2016, it had a population of 30,173, making it the List of urban areas in the Republic of Ireland by population, tenth largest settlement in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is at the confluence of the River Boyne and Leinster Blackwater, Blackwater, around 50 km northwest of Dublin. County Meath
County Meath (; gle, Contae na Mí or simply ) is a county in the Eastern and Midland Region of Ireland, within the province of Leinster. It is bordered by Dublin to the southeast, Louth to the northeast, Kildare to the south, Offaly to the southwest, Westmeath to the west, Cavan to the northwest, and Monaghan to the north. To the east, Meath also borders the Irish Sea along a narrow strip between the rivers Boyne and Delvin, giving it the second shortest coastline of any county. One Day At A Time (song)
"One Day at a Time" is a popular Country and Western-style Christian song written by Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson. It has been recorded by over 200 artists and has reached No.1 in several territories. Scottish singer Lena Martell had a UK Singles Chart number one with her version in 1979. Marilyn Sellars version The song was first recorded by American Country singer Marilyn Sellars in 1974. This version became a US top 40 hit and top 20 hit on the Country Charts. Following this, it won the 1975 Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards for best song. Chart positions Gloria version "One Day at a Time" was recorded by Gloria who released it as a single in August 1977. Showband
The Irish showband was a dance band format popular in Ireland from the mid-1950s to mid-1980s. The showband was based on the internationally popular six- or seven-piece dance band. The band's basic repertoire included standard dance numbers and covers of pop music hits. The versatile music ranged from rock and roll and country and western songs to traditional dixieland jazz and even Irish Céilí dance, Newfie stomps, folk music and waltzes. Key to a showband's popular success was the ability to perform songs currently in the record charts. Some bands also did comedy skits onstage. The line-up usually featured a rhythm section of drums, lead, rhythm and bass guitars, a keyboard instrument, and a brass section of trumpet, saxophone and trombone. Johnny McEvoy
Johnny McEvoy (born 24 April 1945) is an Irish singer and entertainer of Country and Irish genre born in Banagher, County Offaly, Ireland. Personal life Johnny was born in 1945, one of four children with two sisters and a brother to John and Emily McEvoy. His father was a bus driver and his mother was a housewife. Johnny's father was not initially supportive of his musical career: "It wasn't a bad relationship. We just seemed to have no relationship... until, I became famous." His mother, by contrast, was supportive, and suggested that he record Mursheen Durkin. He met his wife Odette in 1967 and they married in 1970. The song The Planter's daughter is written about her and references her supposed ancestry from Strongbow. They have two children: Jonathan and Alice. McEvoy has admitted to finding fame "scary" and believes that it triggered his manic depression, an issue he first spoke about on Gay Byrne's talk show in the early 1990s. Lena Martell
Lena Martell (born Helen Thomson; 15 May 1940) is a Scottish singer, with a long career in theatre, television and musicals. She has recorded thirty albums which include the number one UK single with " One Day at a Time" in 1979. Biography Martell was born in Possilpark, Glasgow on 15 May 1940. began singing at the age of 11 with her eldest brother's band. She became a singer for the Jimmie McGregor Band at the Barrowland Ballroom, Glasgow. After his untimely death, she decided to pursue a career in music as a tribute. She released a number of standards in the 1970s on the Pye record label, drew crowds at cabarets and concert halls and became a major recording star with silver, gold and platinum awards.
