The Rhodophyta also comprises one of the largest phyla of algae, containing over 7,000 currently recognized species with taxonomic revisions ongoing. Studies show that extracts of ''G. furcata'' inhibit the growth of several human cancer cell lines, and can significantly lower blood glucose levels.
