Gliese 486
Gliese 486, also known as Wolf 437, is a M-type main-sequence star in the constellation Virgo. Its surface temperature is 3340 K. Gliese 486 is similar to the Sun in its concentration of heavy elements, with a metallicity Fe/H index of 0.07. It was suspected to be a flare star, although measurements available in 2019 did not reveal any flares. The chemical makeup of the star is unremarkable and consistent with solar abundances or being slightly metal-poor. The star has an unremarkable magnetic field in the chromosphere of about 1.6 kilogauss. It is rotating very slowly and is likely to be very old, belonging kinematically to the old thin disk of the Milky Way. Multiplicity surveys did not detect any stellar companions to Gliese 486 as at 2020. Planetary system In 2021, one planet, named , was discovered on a tight, circular orbit. NameExoWorlds (also known as IAU NameExoWorlds) is the name of various projects managed by the International Astronomical Union (I.A.U.) to encourage names to be submitted for astronomical objects, which would later be considered for official adoption by the organization. History The first such project (NameExoWorlds I), in 2015, regarded the naming of stars and exoplanets. 573,242 votes were submitted by members by the time the contest closed on October 31, 2015, and the names of 31 exoplanets and 14 stars were selected from these. Many of the names chosen were based on world history, mythology and literature. In June 2019, another such project (NameExoWorlds II), in celebration of the organization's hundredth anniversary, in a project officially called IAU100 NameExoWorlds, welcomed countries of the world to submit names for exoplanets and their host stars. ''Hipparcos'' was a scientific satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1989 and operated until 1993. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial objects on the sky. This permitted the first high-precision measurements of the intrinsic brightnesses (compared to the less precise apparent brightness), proper motions, and parallaxes of stars, enabling better calculations of their distance and tangential velocity. When combined with radial velocity measurements from spectroscopy, astrophysicists were able to finally measure all six quantities needed to determine the motion of stars.
