Gliese 3323 C
GJ 3323 (also known as LHS 1723) is a nearby single star located in the equatorial constellation Eridanus, about 0.4° to the northwest of the naked eye star Psi Eridani. It is invisible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude 12.20. Parallax measurements give a distance estimate of from the Sun. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +42.3 km/s. Roughly 104,000 years ago, the star is believed to have come to within of the Solar System. The stellar classification of GJ 3323 is M4.0Ve, indicating that it is a red dwarf, with emission lines appearing in its spectrum. It is fully convective and a source of X-ray emission. The star has 17% of the Sun's mass, 19% of the radius of the Sun, and just 0.4% of the Sun's luminosity. Eridanus (constellation)
Eridanus () is a constellation in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is represented as a river. One of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It is the sixth largest of the modern constellations, and the one that extends farthest in the sky from north to south. The same name was later taken as a Latin name for the real Po River and also for the name of a minor river in Athens. Features Stars At its southern end is the magnitude 0.5 star Achernar, designated Alpha Eridani. High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher
The High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) is a high-precision echelle planet-finding spectrograph installed in 2002 on the ESO's 3.6m telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile. The first light was achieved in February 2003. HARPS has discovered over 130 exoplanets to date, with the first one in 2004, making it the most successful planet finder behind the Kepler space observatory. It is a second-generation radial-velocity spectrograph, based on experience with the ELODIE and CORALIE instruments. Characteristics The HARPS can attain a precision of 0.97 m/s (3.5 km/h), making it one of only two instruments worldwide with such accuracy. Hartmut Jahreiß
Hartmut Jahreiß (born 1942) is a German astronomer associated with Astronomisches Rechen-Institut specializing in the study of nearby stars. Work Hartmut Jahreiß obtained his Ph.D from the University of Heidelberg. His thesis was on the spatial distribution, kinetics and age of stars near the Sun. Jahreiß soon began work at Astronomisches Rechen-Institut with Wilhelm Gliese, a world-renowned authority on nearby stars. Jahreiß is best known for his collaboration with Gliese on the publication of new editions of the ''Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars'' in 1979 and 1991. Upon the death of Gliese in 1993, Jahreiß wrote Gliese's obituary. The Gliese catalog stars are now known by the abbreviation ''GJ'' (Gliese–Jahreiß) in recognition of Jahreiß's contribution. Wilhelm Gliese
Wilhelm Gliese (, English ; 21 June 1915 – 12 June 1993) was a German astronomer who specialized in the study and cataloging of nearby stars. Life Gliese was born in Goldberg, now in Polish Silesia, the son of judge Wilhelm Gliese. He worked at the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut, first in Berlin and then in Heidelberg. While a student he was encouraged by the Dutch astronomer Peter van de Kamp to study nearby stars, which he did for the rest of his life. His astronomical research was interrupted during World War II when he was conscripted into the German ''Wehrmacht'' in 1942 and sent to the Eastern Front. In 1945, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and was not released until 1949. He finally resumed his research at the Institute, which had been moved by the U.S. Army to Heidelberg after the war. Willem Jacob Luyten (March 7, 1899 – November 21, 1994) was a Dutch-American astronomer. "Willem Jacob Luyten", ''Marquis Who's Who'', 2006. Life Jacob Luyten was born in Semarang, Java, at the time part of the Dutch East Indies. His mother was Cornelia M. Francken and his father Jacob Luyten, a teacher of French. At the age of 11 he observed Halley's Comet, which started his fascination with astronomy. He also had a knack for languages, and eventually could speak nine. In 1912 his family moved back to the Netherlands where he studied astronomy at the University of Amsterdam, receiving his BA in 1918. He was the first student to earn his PhD (at the age of 22) with Ejnar Hertzsprung at Leiden University. In 1921 he left for the United States where he first worked at the Lick Observatory.
