Gliese 176
Gliese 176 is a red dwarf in the constellation of Taurus. Based upon parallax measurements from the Hipparcos mission, it is located approximately 30 light-years away. The star is orbited by a Super-Earth. Planetary system A planetary companion to Gliese 176 was announced in 2008. Radial velocity observations with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) showed a 10.24-day periodicity, which was interpreted as being caused by a planet. With a semi-amplitude of 11.6 m/s, its minimum mass equated to 24.5 Earth masses, or approximately 1.4 Neptune masses. Observations with the HARPS spectrograph could not confirm the 10.24-day variation. Instead, two other periodicities were detected at 8.78 and 40.0 days, with amplitudes below the HET observational errors. Gliese 176 b is a super-Earth exoplanet approximately 31 light years away in the constellation of Taurus. This planet orbits very close to its parent red dwarf star Gliese 176 (also called "HD 285968"). The initial announcement confused the planetary periodicity with the stellar periodicity of 40 days, thus giving a 10.24 day period for a 25 Earth-mass planet. Subsequent readings filtered out the star's rotation, giving a more accurate reading of the planet's orbit and minimum mass. The planet orbits inside the inner magnetosphere of its star. The quoted temperature of 450 K is a "thermal equilibrium" temperature. It is projected to be dominated by a rocky core, but the true mass is unknown. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial objects on the sky. Gliese 674 (GJ 674) is a small red dwarf star with an exoplanetary companion in the southern constellation of Ara. It is too faint to be visible to the naked eye, having an apparent visual magnitude of 9.38 and an absolute magnitude of 11.09. The system is located at a distance of 14.8 light-years from the Sun based on parallax measurements, but is drifting closer with a radial velocity of −2.9 km/s. It is a candidate member of the 200 million year old Castor stream of co-moving stars. This is a low-mass M-type main-sequence star with a stellar classification of M3V. The star is weakly active and show star spots on a regular basis. The High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS) is a high-precision echelle planet-finding spectrograph installed in 2002 on the ESO's 3.6m telescope at La Silla Observatory in Chile. The first light was achieved in February 2003. HARPS has discovered over 130 exoplanets to date, with the first one in 2004, making it the most successful planet finder behind the Kepler space observatory.
