''Glenroe'' was a television drama series broadcast on RTÉ One in Ireland between September 1983, when the first episode was aired, and May 2001. A spin-off from ''Bracken'' — a short-lived RTÉ drama itself spun off from ''The Riordans'' — ''Glenroe'' was broadcast, generally from September to May, each Sunday night at 8:30 pm. Joe Lynch (actor)
Joseph Laurence Lynch (16 July 1925 – 1 August 2001) was an Irish actor who had a long career in both comedy and drama. He provided voice work for children's animated series, in particular ''Chorlton and the Wheelies''. Lynch was also a singer and songwriter, performing in the film ''Johnny Nobody'' (1961). He also recorded work by other songwriters, including Leo Maguire's "The Whistling Gypsy" and Dick Farrelly's "Cottage by the Lee", one of his biggest 1950s recordings. Early life Born in Mallow in County Cork, Lynch attended the North Monastery Christian Brothers School. He had a number of other jobs before moving into acting and broadcasting full time. Career Initially acting part-time with the Cork Shakespearean Company and at the Cork Opera House, by 1947 Lynch was acting full-time. The Riordans
''The Riordans'' was the second Irish television drama serial made by Raidio Telefís Éireann (then called ''Telefís Éireann''). It ran from 1965 to 1979 and was set in the fictional townland of Leestown in County Kilkenny. Its location filming with Outside Broadcast Units, rather than using only TV studios, broke the mould of broadcasting in the soap opera genre and inspired the creation of its British equivalent, ''Emmerdale Farm'' (now called ''Emmerdale'') by Yorkshire Television in 1972. Wesley Burrowes
Wesley Burrowes (15 April 193031 December 2015) was an Irish playwright and screenwriter. Originally from Northern Ireland, he became a resident of the Republic of Ireland. He was best known as the chief scriptwriter on ''The Riordans'' and ''Glenroe'', two of the most successful drama series produced by RTÉ Television. Early life Wesley Burrowes was born and raised in Bangor, County Down in Northern Ireland. RTÉ One ( ga, RTÉ a hAon) is an Irish free-to-air flagship television channel owned and operated by Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). Alan Stanford (born 1949) is an English-Irish actor, director and writer. He has worked in the theatre for many years, including a 30 year association with the Gate Theatre as both actor and director. He is well known for playing George Manning in the popular Irish drama series ''Glenroe''. Personal life Though originally from Liverpool, Alan Stanford's childhood was spent on the Isle of Wight in the South of England. He was an only child. He trained as an actor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Stanford moved to Ireland in 1969 after touring there and eventually became an Irish citizen. ''Bracken'' is a television drama serial broadcast from 1980 to 1982 on RTÉ 1 in Ireland, depicting rural life in and around County Wicklow. Created and written by Wesley Burrowes, it starred Gabriel Byrne and Niall Tóibín. The show is chiefly known for being the link between two long standing RTÉ series, in that Gabriel Byrne's character, Pat Barry, had first appeared in ''The Riordans'', towards the end of that show's run. Kilcoole
Kilcoole () is a village in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is three kilometres (2 miles) south of Greystones, 14 kilometres (9 miles) north of Wicklow, and about 28 kilometres (17 miles) south of Dublin. It was used as the set for the Irish television series ''Glenroe'', which ran through the 1980s and 1990s. The village has a large industrial estate to the south. An area of marshland runs along the coast from Kilcoole south to Wicklow town, called the ''Murragh''. This area is home to many endangered species of plants and animals. The beach in Kilcoole is the summertime home of the little tern, one of the few places in Ireland where these birds nest. Within the village, is an area of flora known as the ''Rock'' which is a huge rock/hill that predates the Cambrian Period. Horslips
Horslips are an Irish Celtic rock band that compose, arrange and perform songs frequently inspired by traditional Irish airs, jigs and Reel (dance), reels. The group are regarded as 'founding fathers of Celtic rock' for their fusion of traditional Irish music with rock music and went on to inspire many local and international acts. They formed in 1970 and 'retired' in 1980 for an extended period. The name originated from a spoonerism on Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse which became "The Four Poxmen of The Horslypse". Although Horslips had limited commercial success when the band was playing in the 70s, there was a revival of interest in their music in the late 1990s and they came to be regarded as one of the defining bands of the Celtic rock genre. Maureen Toal
Maureen Toal (7 September 1930 – 24 August 2012) was an Irish stage and television actress whose professional career lasted for more than sixty years. She was born in 1930 and was originally from Fairview, Dublin. Toal began performing at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1946, when she was just sixteen years old. She became a fixture at the theatre, portraying Bessie Burgess in ''The Plough and the Stars'' and the Widow Quinn in ''The Playboy of the Western World''. She also appeared in several one woman shows, including ''Baglady'', which was written by Irish playwright Frank McGuinness. Another playwright, John B. Keane, wrote the role of Mame Fadden in his play, ''The Change in Mame Fadden'', specifically for Toal.
