Glen Urquhart High School
Glen Urquhart High School is a six-year comprehensive secondary school situated in Drumnadrochit. The school's primary catchment area ranges from Abriachan in the north to Invermoriston in the south, and as far west as Cannich and Tomich. Its associated Primary schools are Glenurquhart, Balnain and Cannich Bridge. History Glenurquhart Public School was established in 1877 in the Culanloan area of Drumnadrochit. A secondary department was later added in 1893 with Benjamin Skinner given responsibility for organising the secondary curriculum. A new building was constructed for the primary department in 1975, and since 1980 Glenurquhart Primary School has existed as a separate entity. After over a century in the Culanloan building, the school moved into a new building in 2002. Drumnadrochit
Drumnadrochit (; gd, Druim na Drochaid) is a village in the Highland local government council area of Scotland, lying near the west shore of Loch Ness at the foot of Glen Urquhart. The village is close to several neighbouring settlements: the villages of Milton to the west, Kilmore to the east and Lewiston to the south. The villages act as a centre for regional tourism beside Loch Ness, as well as being a local economic hub for the nearby communities. Geography The village lies in Glen Urquhart on the A82 road to Inverness, near a junction with the A831 and beside the river Enrick. The river Enrick runs the length of Glen Urquhart, meeting the river Coltie and then flowing into Loch Ness (the eastern edge of Drumnadrochit). The Highland Council
The Highland Council (' ), the political body covering the Highland local authority created in 1995, comprises 21 wards, each electing three or four councillors by the single transferable vote system, which creates a form of proportional representation. The total number of councillors is 74, and the main meeting place and main offices are at the Highland Council Headquarters in Glenurquhart Road, Inverness. Current administration The most recent election of the council was on 5 May 2022. The largest group elected were 22 councillors from the SNP, who were joined by 21 independent, 15 Liberal Democrat, 10 Conservative, 4 Green and 2 Labour councillors. Abriachan
Abriachan (; Gaelic: ''Obar Itheachan''), is a village in the Highland council area of Scotland. It is situated high above the western shore of Loch Ness, 15 km to the south-west of the city of Inverness. The village has a population of approximately 120. There are no schools in Abriachan, so children travel by bus into Inverness or to Dochgarroch or Tomnacross for their education. At the bottom of the Abriachan hill, where the Kilianan stream meets Loch Ness, is Abriachan Garden Nursery, with a woodland walk and plant selling area. Invermoriston
Invermoriston (''Inbhir Mhoireastain'' in Gaelic) () is a small village north of Fort Augustus, Highland, Scotland. The village is on the A82 road, at a junction with the A887. The village's most visited attraction is the Thomas Telford bridge, built in 1813, which crosses the spectacular River Moriston falls. This bridge used to form part of the main road between Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus but was replaced in the 1930s with the new bridge used today. Invermoriston's attractions include a hotel, called Glenmoriston Arms, village shop, clog and craft shop as well as a coffee shop/restaurant. Cannich
Cannich (Gaelic: ''Canaich'') is a village at the southern end of Strathglass, in the Highlands of Scotland, about west of the city of Inverness. It is at the furthest point of the A831 that loops around the Aird from Beauly to Drumnadrochit. It is home to Strathglass Shinty Club, one of the oldest organised shinty clubs in the world. The game of shinty and the Strathglass club owe much to Captain Chisholm. He chaired a meeting in the Glen Affric Hotel, Cannich, on 27 January 1880, at which he was elected the first Chief. Duncan Chisholm, Raonabhraid, was voted in as secretary and treasurer, and 10 Chieftains representing each of the districts in the Strath were also elected. Tomich (village)
Tomich ( gd, Tomaich) is a Victorian model conservation village situated in the Scottish Highlands at the western end of Strathglass, approximately 30 miles from Inverness. The Conservation Village of Tomich consists of privately owned properties that were originally created to serve Guisachan House, which is now derelict but under stabilization. Much of the history and rare flora and fauna of the area remains and is very much enjoyed still today. Because of its inspiring scenery and history, the area is used for worldwide recognised events. These include worldwide Retriever gatherings, World Orienteering Championships and others. Peter English
Professor Peter English (9 March 1937 – 3 January 2009) was a scientist, shinty player, and social historian from Lochletter, Glen Urquhart, situated by the shores of Loch Ness in Highland, Scotland. Career English was an expert in agricultural science,particularly in the field of animal welfare. He was an employee of Aberdeen University from 1961 until 2002, eventually attaining the position of professor of animal science and husbandry in 1998. Additionally, he was on the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council for nine years. His book ''The Sow - Improving Her Efficiency'' has been translated into 23 languages. Shinty English was well regarded for his contributions to the sport of shinty. As a young man, he played in a successful Glenurquhart Shinty Club side in the 1950s and early 1960s before moving to Aberdeen, where he was a founder of Aberdeen Camanachd and the Aberdeen University Shinty Club. Michael Fraser (footballer)
Michael Alan Fraser (born 8 October 1983) is a Scottish former football goalkeeper. During his career he played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Motherwell, Montrose, Birkirkara, Ross County and Elgin City. Club career Fraser was born in Inverness, and signed for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2002. He was previously a talented shinty player with Glenurquhart Shinty Club but gave up the sport to pursue his professional ambitions. His first team breakthrough came when Mark Brown signed for Celtic in January 2007. Fraser made a memorable save in a 3–2 home win over Celtic the following season and was first-choice at Inverness until he conceded five goals against Rangers on 1 November 2008, after which he was dropped in favour of Ryan Esson. Stuart MacKintosh (born 20 July 1986) AKA ''Smack is a shinty player and musician from Drumnadrochit, Loch Ness, Scotland. He plays in goal for Glenurquhart Shinty Club and he is the current Scotland goalkeeper. Shinty career MacKintosh has played for Glenurquhart Shinty Club from an early age. He has been a specialist goalkeeper for most of his career and holds the record for the number of appearances at Under 21 level in the annual Shinty/Hurling series.
