Glen Iris is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Boroondara and Stonnington local government areas. Glen Iris recorded a population of 26,131 at the 2021 census. Glen Iris has been Melbourne's geographical centre of population since the 1990s. History Captain Thomas Henderson, of the Royal Navy, arrived in Melbourne on a ship called ''Iris'' in 1850. He acquired a property bounded by Gardiners Creek, High Street and a line extending Summerhill Road to Gardiners Creek. The property was advertised for sale as ''Glen Iris'', in 1852. Robert Kent, a subsequent owner of the ''Glen Iris'' homestead, suggested a Mechanics' Institute be established, but it was never completed. A Wesleyan church was established in 1865 and in 1871 land was granted for an adjacent school (now Glen Iris Primary School). By the 1880s reference was made to the Township of Glen Iris. The electoral district of Ashwood is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Melbourne, Australia. It was created in the redistribution of electoral boundaries in 2021, and came into effect at the 2022 Victorian state election. Ashwood covers areas of the abolished districts of Burwood and Mount Waverley with its boundaries being Burke Road to the west, the Monash Freeway to the south, Burwood Highway and Toorak Road to the north, and Blackburn Road to the east. The seat contains the suburbs of Ashburton, Ashwood, Chadstone, Glen Iris, Mount Waverley, and parts of Burwood, Burwood East, and Camberwell. The City of Boroondara () is a local government area in Victoria, Australia. It is located in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It was formed in June 1994 from the amalgamation of the Cities of Kew, Camberwell and Hawthorn. It has an area of . In June 2018 the City had a population of 181,289. Gardiners Creek
Gardiners Creek, originally known as Kooyongkoot Creek, is a waterway in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and part of the Yarra River catchment. In a few sparse locations remnant riparian bushland survives, however the majority of its length has been heavily urbanised, and the creek has been degraded in much the same way as other Melbourne eastern suburban waterways such as the Mullum Mullum Creek and Koonung Creek. The Gardiners Creek Trail follows the creek for most of its length. Naming The creek's original name was ''Kooyongkoot'', from the Woiwurrung language of the indigenous Australian Wurundjeri-Baluk group, which translates to 'haunt of the waterfowl'.
