Glen Gainer Jr.
Glen B. Gainer Jr. (July 4, 1927 – September 8, 2009) was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served as the 18th State Auditor of West Virginia from 1977 to 1993. Early life and career Born in 1927 to Glen. B Gainer Sr. and Nettie Elizabeth (née Smith), Glen B. Gainer Jr. had one brother, Thomas Gainer. He married Sally Jo Padgett in 1955 and they had one daughter, Beth, and two sons, John David and Glen. Gainer graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1945 and then from Marietta College. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and then worked as a school teacher and an athletic coach in Wood County. Political career Gainer's first venture into politics came when he served as the mayor of Parkersburg from 1968 to 1970. He was the last Mayor to serve under the city commission form of government. Jay Rockefeller
John Davison "Jay" Rockefeller IV (born June 18, 1937) is a retired American politician who served as a United States senator from West Virginia (1985–2015). He was first elected to the Senate in 1984, while in office as governor of West Virginia (1977–85). Rockefeller moved to Emmons, West Virginia, to serve as a VISTA worker in 1964 and was first elected to public office as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates (1966-1968). Rockefeller was later elected secretary of state of West Virginia (1968–1973) and was president of West Virginia Wesleyan College (1973–1975). He became the state's senior U.S. senator when the long-serving Senator Robert Byrd died in June 2010. Rockefeller is the great-grandson of oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, who died less than a month before Jay's birth. West Virginia's 1st Congressional District
West Virginia's 1st congressional district is currently located in the northern part of the state. It is the most regularly drawn of the state's three districts. As a result of the state's loss of a seat as a result of the 2020 United States census the district will be completely changed for the 2022 congressional elections. Currently it includes the industrial Rust Belt area of the state's northern panhandle which includes the district's third largest city, Wheeling, as well as Fairmont, Clarksburg, and the college town of Morgantown, the home of the main campus of West Virginia University. The largest city in the district is Parkersburg; the second largest is Morgantown. It also includes many rural farm and timber producing areas. Parkersburg High School Alumni
Parkersburg is a city in and the county seat of Wood County, West Virginia. Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers, it is the state's fourth-largest city and the largest city in the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna metropolitan area. The population was 29,749 at the 2020 census. The city is about south of Marietta, Ohio. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached Parkersburg in 1857, but lacked a crossing over the Ohio River until after the American Civil War. When the B&O completed the Parkersburg Bridge (CSX) 1868–1870 to Belpre, it was the longest railroad bridge in the world.
