Glen Aplin is a rural locality in the Southern Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Glen Aplin had a population of 503 people. Geography The New England Highway passes from north to south through the locality. The Southern railway line also passes from north to south through the locality with the locality served by the now-abandoned Glen Aplin railway station. (). Although not gazetted as a town, most of the population lives close to the railway station. History The locality takes its name from the railway station, which in turn was named in about 1886, after Dyson Aplin, a mine proprietor and pioneer settler in the area. Severn River Provisional School opened in 1872 but closed in 1873. It reopened on 4 August 1887, but closed in 1906. It reopened in 1908, becoming Severn River State School on 1 January 1909. Paul Hilton (politician)
Paul Jerome Remigius Hilton (1 October 1899 – 18 August 1965) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1935 until 1963 representing the seat of Carnarvon, and a minister in both the Hanlon and Gair Ministries. Biography Hilton was born to Richard Hilton, a school teacher, and his wife Agnes (née Quirke). He was educated at the state school in Allora and in 1915 got a job as a pay clerk for Queensland Railways, moving to Toowoomba and ultimately Stanthorpe by 1921. He served as an NCO in the militia but was rejected for overseas service for World War I. In 1922, he married Esther Mary Clifford in the town of Gatton; they were to have two sons and two daughters. He became involved with many public bodies in Stanthorpe at this time. Southern Railway Line
The Southern railway line serves the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. The long line branches from the Western line at Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, and proceeds south through Warwick and Stanthorpe to the New South Wales/Queensland state border at Wallangarra. History The first section of the Southern railway opened from the end of the Main Line railway at Toowoomba to Millhill to the north of Warwick, on 9 January 1871, the line terminating there to save the cost of a bridge over the Condamine River. In 1872, tin was discovered at Stanthorpe, but disagreement over the route to be taken through Warwick resulted in the approval to extend the line not being given until 1877. The difficult terrain south of Warwick required two tunnels, one through solid rock which took two years to excavate, and the line opened to Stanthorpe on 3 May 1881.
