Ferguslie Park
Ferguslie Park is a residential suburb at the north-west extremity of Paisley in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It is bordered by the town of Linwood to the west and Glasgow Airport to the north. Ferguslie Park has history of being among the most deprived communities in Scotland. Attempts have been made at regeneration despite significant challenges. History Ferguslie has origins dating back to the sixteenth century, and was the site of a large estate associated with the monks based at Paisley. The modern town, however, was born in the 1850s around an iron-stone mining settlement known as Inkerman. At its closure, the town was demolished and its residents moved to Ferguslie or nearby Elderslie. Its main form was gained following the Housing Act of 1949. It was hit particularly hard by the closure of traditional industries particularly based in nearby Linwood in the late-1970s and early-1980s. As a consequence, and also due to its isolated position separated from Paisley and other ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Abbey, Renfrewshire
Abbey, or sometimes Abbey Paisley, is a civil parish in Renfrewshire, Scotland traditionally centred on the towns of Paisley and Johnstone and including the smaller settlements of Elderslie, Inkerman, Hurlet, Nitshill, the Dovecothall area of Barrhead, and the hamlets of Thorn and Quarrelton, now subsumed into Johnstone. The parish owes its name to Paisley Abbey, the central religious site in the county and the parish church. The town of Paisley fell entirely within the Abbey Parish until 1736, when three parishes were formed within the burgh: High, Middle and Laigh (Low). A small portion of the Abbey Parish remained within the burgh after this time. For religious purposes, the towns of Johnstone and Elderslie formed their own ''quoad sacra'' parishes. Community Councils Following the decline in the importance of parishes in Scotland for local government, the parochial institutions of Abbey Parish have been replaced with various separate community councils A community council ... County Of Renfrew
Renfrewshire or the County of Renfrew is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. It contains the local government council areas of Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire, as well as parts of Glasgow and is occasionally named Greater Renfrewshire to distinguish the county from the modern council area. The county borders the city of Glasgow and Lanarkshire to the east and Ayrshire to the south and west. The Firth of Clyde forms its northern boundary, with Dunbartonshire and Argyllshire on the opposing banks. Renfrewshire's early history is marked by ancient British and Roman settlement. Renfrewshire can trace its origin to the feudal lands at Strathgryfe granted to Walter Fitzalan, the first High Steward of Scotland. Robert III of Scotland, a descendant of Fitzalan, established the shire of Renfrew-based out of the Royal burgh of Renfrew, the site of the House of Stuart's castle and Renfrewshire's county town. ...
