Glasgow Giants
Ashfield Giants were a motorcycle speedway team based at Saracen Park, Glasgow, Scotland between 1949 and 1953. The track operated on an open licence in 1953 and were reformed for a one of season during the 2000 Speedway Conference League. History The original Giants team were the majority of the Newcastle Diamonds team of 1948. Tuesday nights 1949 to 1951 were "Giants Night" and arguably their most famous rider was Ken Le Breton, known as 'The White Ghost'. Ken (real name Francis) was the star man in his white painted leathers and led the Giants 1949 and 1950. Saracen Park
Saracen Park or Ashfield Stadium, also known as Peugeot Ashfield Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a stadium in Glasgow, Scotland. It is currently shared by Ashfield F.C. for Association football, football and the Glasgow Tigers (speedway), Glasgow Tigers for Motorcycle speedway, speedway. It has also previously been a venue for Greyhound racing in the United Kingdom, greyhound racing. The ground was originally opened for football in 1937. History Ashfield F.C. opened Saracen Park for Scottish Junior Football Association, junior football in 1937, and have played at the ground since. Located in the Possilpark area of Glasgow, it was named after the adjacent Saracen Foundry. 1952 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1952 National League Division Two was the seventh post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The post-war boom was now fading and the League was shortened to 12 teams with Division Three now defunct and continued only on a regional basis. Previous champions Norwich Stars had been promoted to Division One. Newcastle, Walthamstow and Halifax had closed whilst Fleetwood Flyers changed to Fleetwood Knights and ran only open meetings. Poole Pirates were the only new entrant, promoted from the former lower tier. Poole Pirates won the title, having won Division Three in the previous season. 1951 Speedway National League Division Two
The 1951 National League Division Two was the sixth post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The League was extended again with 18 teams starting the season. New entrants were Motherwell Eagles and there were again three teams promoted from Division Three - the champions Oxford Cheetahs, third place finishers Leicester Hunters and Liverpool Chads (despite finishing 8th). Plymouth Devils moved back down in the opposite direction. Norwich Stars retained their title. However after the season had finished a fourth rider in five years was killed at their Firs Stadium. 21-year-old Bob Howes died after hitting the fence during a training practice race on 10 November 1951. Southampton Saints and Sheffield Tars resigned in mid-season and their records were expunged. The 1950 National League Division Two was the fifth post-war season of the second tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The League was extended again to 15 teams with the promotion from Division Three of Halifax Dukes, Plymouth, Yarmouth and Hanley. Bristol Bulldogs, champions for the previous two seasons, moved up to National League (1932–1964), Division One. Norwich Stars claimed the title by a single point. On 1 July 1950, two riders were killed on the same night.
