Glamorganshire was a United Kingdom constituencies, parliamentary constituency in Wales, returning two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the British House of Commons. The Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 divided it into five new constituencies: East Glamorganshire (UK Parliament constituency), East Glamorganshire, South Glamorganshire (UK Parliament constituency), South Glamorganshire, Mid Glamorganshire (UK Parliament constituency), Mid Glamorganshire, Gower (UK Parliament constituency), Gower and Rhondda (UK Parliament constituency), Rhondda. Boundaries This constituency comprised the whole of Glamorganshire. East Glamorganshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
East Glamorganshire was a parliamentary constituency in Glamorganshire, Wales. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post system. Overview The constituency was created by the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1918 general election. Throughout its existence it was held by the Liberal Party and it was a constituency largely dominated by the coal mining industry. Boundaries Created in the redistribution of seats in 1885 & from the old Glamorganshire constituency which had been in existence since 1541, the seat covered a wide area that included Llantwit Fardre, Church Village, Tonteg, Pentyrch, Creigiau, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Abercynon, Llanfabon, Gelligaer, Hengoed. Edward Mansell
Edward Mansell FRIBA (c. 1861 – 11 March 1941) was an architect based in Birmingham. Career He was a pupil of J Barnsley and Sons, and then articled to his father, Thomas Henry Mansell. He was made Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1908. His main office was 47 Temple Row, Birmingham. Sir John Stradling, 1st Baronet
Sir John Stradling, 1st Baronet (1563 – 9 September 1637), was an English poet, scholar and politician. Life John Stradling was the son of Francis and Elizabeth Stradling of St George, Bristol, and was adopted by his second cousin, Sir Edward Stradling. He was educated under Edward Green, a canon of Bristol, before matriculating at Brasenose College, Oxford in 1580. He graduated BA from Magdalen Hall in 1584, having gained a reputation as "a miracle for his forwardness in learning and pregnancy of parts". After studying for a while at one of the inns of court, he travelled abroad. Stradling was Sheriff of Glamorgan for 1608 and 1620. Knighted on 15 May 1608, he was then described as living in Shropshire. In 1609, on the death of Sir Edward Stradling, he inherited St Donat's Castle and estate in Glamorgan. Robert Mansell
Sir Robert Mansell (1573–1656) was an admiral of the English Royal Navy and a Member of Parliament (MP), mostly for Welsh constituencies. His name was sometimes given as Sir Robert Mansfield and Sir Robert Maunsell. Early life Mansel was a Welshman, the son of Sir Edward Mansel of Penrice and Margam (died 1585), although he later established himself among the gentry of Norfolk. His early naval career is not recorded, but he served in the 1596 raid on Cádiz under Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, commanding HMS ''Vanguard'', and was knighted for his part in it. He subsequently took part in Essex's Islands Voyage to the Azores (1597), then held commands off the Irish coast during Essex's campaign in Ireland. In October 1602 he was fitted out with a fleet and with the Dutch helped defeat six Spanish galleys under Federico Spinola at the Battle of the Narrow Seas. William Price (of Briton Ferry)
William Price was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1614 and 1626. Price was the eldest son of Lleisan Price of Briton Ferry, who had been MP for Cardiff, and his wife Maud Evans daughter of D Evans of Gnoll. John Herbert (Secretary Of State)
Sir John Herbert (1550 – 9 July 1617) was a Welsh lawyer, diplomat and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1586 and 1611. He was Secretary of State under Elizabeth I and James I. Life Herbert was the son of Matthew Herbert of Swansea and was descended from an illegitimate son of William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. Herbert may have been educated at Christ Church, Oxford, although this is questioned. He was admitted an honorary member of the College of Doctors of Law in November 1573 and awarded MA. He was a commissioner of the High Court of Admiralty from 1575 to 1584 (with David Lewis) and Master of Requests from 1586 to 1601 (with William Aubrey from 1590). Sir Thomas Mansell, 1st Baronet (1556 – 20 December 1631) was a Welsh politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1614. Mansell was the eldest son of Sir Edward Mansall of Margam. Mansell was knighted in 1581. Then in 1593 Mansell was High Sheriff of Glamorgan.
