Gladys Caldwell Fisher
Gladys Caldwell Fisher (April 6, 1907 – April 18, 1952) was an American sculptor and animalier, born in Loveland, Colorado and based in Denver. Best known in Colorado, she was nationally recognized for her work. Early life and studies Gladys Caldwell moved to Denver when she was eleven and attended East High School and Manual High School. While in school she joined began the study of sculpture at the Beaux-Arts Atelier in Denver. There she studies modeling with Denver sculptor Robert Garrison, composition with John E. Thompson, and art lessons from Allen Tupper True. She received a scholarship from the Denver Allied Arts Association in 1926, which allowed her to study in New York City with Alexander Archipenko. Another scholarship funded study in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere to study with Jose de Creeft, Aristide Maillol, and George Hilbert. Animalier
An animalier (, ) is an artist, mainly from the 19th century, who specializes in, or is known for, skill in the realistic portrayal of animals. "Animal painter" is the more general term for earlier artists. Although the work may be in any genre or format, the term is most often applied to sculptors and painters. ''Animalier'' as a collective plural noun, or ''animalier bronzes'', is also a term in antiques for small-scale sculptures of animals, of which large numbers were produced, often mass-produced, primarily in 19th-century France and to a lesser extent elsewhere in continental Europe. Denver Zoo
Denver Zoo is an nonprofit zoological garden located in City Park of Denver, Colorado, United States. Founded in 1896, it is operated by the Denver Zoological Foundation and funded in part by the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) in addition to ticket sales and private donations. It is the most visited paid attraction in Colorado. Denver Zoo was started with the donation of an orphaned American black bear. With the construction of Bear Mountain, it became the first zoo in the United States to use naturalistic zoo enclosures rather than cages with bars. It expanded on this concept with Primate Panorama, featuring huge mesh tents and open areas for apes and monkeys, and with Predator Ridge, which has three separate areas through which animals are rotated so that their overlapping scents provide environmental enrichment.
