Gisela (757, Aachen, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany – 810–11, Chelles, Seine-et-Marne, Ile-de-France, France) was a Frankish princess and abbess. She was the daughter of Pepin the Short and his wife Bertrada of Laon. She was the sister of Charlemagne and Carloman.''Sanctity and Power: The Dual Pursuit of Early Medieval Women'', Suzanne F. Wemple, ''Becoming Visible: Women in European History'', ed. Renate Bridenthal, Claudia Koonz and Susan Stuard, (Houghton Mifflin Company, 1987), 139. Gisela, Daughter Of Louis The Pious
Gisela (born 820) was the youngest daughter of Louis the Pious and his second wife, Judith of Bavaria. She married the powerful and influential Eberhard, Duke of Friuli, later canonized as Saint Eberhard, with whom she had several children including King Berengar I of Italy, Margrave of Friuli. Gisela was renowned for her piety and virtue, much like her namesake, Gisela (the sister of Charlemagne), who had chosen the religious life from girlhood. Her dowry consisted of many rich domains including the fisc of Cysoing; located at the center of the country of Pèvele, Cysoing was one of the most beautiful fiscs in the region and became one of her and Eberhard's regular residences. They founded a monastery there, in the 850s, which was not completed until after their deaths. The nunnery San Salvatore was given to her after Ermengarde, wife of Lothair I. For a time, she served as both abbess and ''rectrix''. She dedicated herself to the education of her and Eberhard's many child ... Gisela Of France
Gisela (french: Gisèle; fl. 911) was a French princess who was married to Rollo, Duke of Normandy. According to limited early records, Rollo was betrothed to Gisela, daughter to the king of West Francia, Charles the Simple, after Rollo's conversion to Christianity upon his ascension as ruler of Normandy in 911. The marriage and the existence of Gisela are not independently confirmed, allowing for a legendary character of Gisela. There is some debate whether, if she did exist, she was a legitimate or an illegitimate daughter of Charles. Norman chronicler William of Jumieges refers to Rollo having two relationships: a captive taken at Bayeux Poppa to whom he joined himself to her by marriage more danico ("according to Norse custom"). She was mother of his son William Longsword. He relates that he put Poppa aside to marry Gisela ''more Cristiano'' ("according to Christian custom") at the time of the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, and that when Gisela died, he returned to Poppa. ... Gisela Of Swabia
Gisela of Swabia ( 990 – 15 February 1043), was queen of Germany from 1024 to 1039 and empress of the Holy Roman Empire from 1027 to 1039 by her third marriage with Emperor Conrad II. She was the mother of Emperor Henry III. She was regent of Swabia for her minor son Duke Ernest II of Swabia in 1015, although it seems at that time her husband Conrad was the one who held the reins of government, leading to the enmity between stepfather and stepson. She was an active empress, exemplifying a tradition in which, up to the period of the Hohenstaufens, as the ''consors regni'' (ruling partner to the king or emperor), the queen and empress held a substantive role in the government, often intervening in the drafting of documents or even issuing documents in her own name. She reigned as regent for her absent husband in 1037. Early life Gisela was the daughter of Duke Herman II of Swabia and Gerberga of Burgundy, daughter of King Conrad the Peaceful. Both her parents were descendan ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Among these keepsakes was a poem written for him by a young Gisela one Christmas; the poem was said to be the most treasured item among this collection.
