Girlguiding Scotland
Girlguiding Scotland is part of the worldwide Guiding movement. It is the country's largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women with 61,375 members in 3,500 units throughout Scotland. History The origins of the Guiding and Scouting movement date back to Allison Greenlees (then Allison Cargill) at Laurel Bank School. She started the Cuckoo Patrol, after reading an edition of '' Scouting for Boys'' and wanted something like the Boy Scouts to be available to girls. In 1907 Robert Baden-Powell formed the Boy Scouts as a training organisation for boys. The Cuckoo Patrol was the first Patrol of Girl Scouts in Scotland, and was formed in Glasgow in 1908 with links to the 1st Glasgow Scout Patrol; similar patrols were being set up all over the UK. This led to a more specific demand for "something for the girls" at the Crystal Palace Rally in 1910. Allison Greenlees
Allison Greenlees (born Allison Hope Cargill; 13 August 1896 – 4 August 1979) formed a group of girl scouts before it was possible for her to become Scotland's first ever Girl Guide and a founder member of Girlguiding Scotland. Early life Born in Hillhead, Glasgow, she was the daughter of Mary Hope Walker Grierson and Sir John Cargill, 1st Baronet. She had no brother and if she had been a son then she would have become a baronet. Greenlees set up a precursor to Girl Guides with five friends from Laurel Bank School, the Cuckoo Patrol, after reading an edition of Scouting for Boys and wanted something like the Boy Scouts to be available to girls. Girlguiding is the operating name of The Guide Association, previously named The Girl Guides Association and is the national guiding organisation of the United Kingdom. It is the UK's largest girl-only youth organisation. Girlguiding is a charitable organisation. Peeblesshire ( gd, Siorrachd nam Pùballan), the County of Peebles or Tweeddale is a historic county of Scotland. Its county town is Peebles, and it borders Midlothian to the north, Selkirkshire to the east, Dumfriesshire to the south, and Lanarkshire to the west. History The origins of Peeblesshire are obscure, but it became a shire sometime around the twelfth century, covering part of the historic district or province of Tweeddale. The southern part of Tweeddale became the sheriffdom of Selkirkshire, also known as Ettrick Forest, whilst the northern part of Tweeddale was initially divided into two sheriffdoms, based at Peebles and Traquair, before those two were united as the single shire of Peebles, or Peeblesshire, around 1304. Brownie (Girl Guides)
Brownies are the section in the Girl Guides (or in the United States, Girl Scouts) organization for girls aged seven years old to ten years old. Exact age limits are slightly different in each organization. History Brownies, originally called Rosebuds, were first organized by Lord Baden-Powell in 1914, to complete the range of age groups for girls in Scouting. They were first run as the youngest group in the Guide Association by Agnes Baden-Powell, Lord Baden-Powell's younger sister. In 1918 his wife, Lady Olave Baden-Powell, took over the responsibility for the Girl Guides and thus for Brownies. Originally the girls were called Rosebuds, but were renamed by Lord Baden-Powell after the girls had complained that they did not like their name. Rainbow (Girl Guides)
Rainbows is the youngest section of GirlGuiding in the UK. They are between the ages of 4 and 7 and at the age of about seven, a Rainbow will usually become a Brownie if she wishes to continue Guiding. In the UK, Rainbows started in 1987, with Lynsey Hickling being the first in the UK. In the United States the equivalent is a Daisy Girl Scout; in Canada the equivalent is a Spark; and in New Zealand they are called Pippins. In Australia, they are called Guides. Uniform The current uniform, since 2004, consists of a blue and red polo shirt with the Rainbow logo on it, a red hooded jacket and a choice of either tracksuit bottoms, leggings or cycling shorts, which the girls are encouraged to pick themselves. Berwickshire
Berwickshire ( gd, Siorrachd Bhearaig) is a historic county, registration county and lieutenancy area in south-eastern Scotland, on the English border. Berwickshire County Council existed from 1890 until 1975, when the area became part of the Borders region, with most of the historic county becoming part of the lower-tier Berwickshire district. Berwickshire district was abolished in 1996, when all the districts in the Borders region merged to become the Scottish Borders council area.
