Giove In Argo
(''Jupiter in Argos'', HWV A14) is an Italian opera by George Frideric Handel. It is one of Handel's three pasticcio works made up of music and arias from his previous operas. The libretto was written by Antonio Maria Lucchini. The opera was first performed at the King's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on 1 May 1739. History The libretto by the Venetian poet Lucchini had been written for a setting by Antonio Lotti in Dresden in 1717. Handel might have heard Lotti's opera on his visit to Dresden in 1719, where the famous Senesino sang the part of Jupiter. Probably Handel took a copy of the text to England and remembered it in 1739 when he was looking for a libretto for a short ''pasticcio'' opera with three female characters in it. Handel brought several ''pasticci'' to the London stage. In most cases he adapted successful works of Italian composers for London, but he wrote three ''pasticci'' in which he re-used music from his own earlier works. George Frideric Handel
George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel (; baptised , ; 23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a German-British Baroque music, Baroque composer well known for his opera#Baroque era, operas, oratorios, anthems, concerto grosso, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. Handel received his training in Halle (Saale), Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712, where he spent the bulk of his career and Handel's Naturalisation Act 1727, became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the middle-German polyphony, polyphonic choral tradition and by composers of the Italian Baroque. Robert Bass (conductor)
Robert H Bass (4 August 1953 – 25 August 2008) was an American conductor who notably served as the music director of the Collegiate Chorale in New York City for almost three decades. Bass studied conducting at Mannes College The New School for Music under Richard Westenburg, who was the Collegiate Chorale's director at that time. In 1979, at the age of 26, he succeeded Westenburg in the position, making his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall with the choir that year. Bass continued leading the Collegiate Chorale up until his death. During his tenure he conducted the ensemble in several noteworthy performances at Carnegie Hall, including the New York premiere of Richard Strauss's ''Friedenstag'' with the Orchestra of St. Luke's in 1997, the United States premiere of Dvořák's ''Dimitrij'', and the American premiere of Handel's ''Giove in Argo''. Alan Curtis (harpsichordist)
Alan Curtis (November 17, 1934July 15, 2015) was an American harpsichordist, musicologist, and conductor of baroque opera. Born in Mason, Michigan, Curtis graduated from studies at the University of Illinois, and received his PhD in 1960 with a dissertation on the keyboard music of Sweelinck. He then relocated to Amsterdam to work with Gustav Leonhardt, with whom he subsequently recorded a number of Bach's concerti for harpsichord. In the 1960s and 1970s, he made a number of recordings of solo harpsichord music including albums dedicated to the keyboard music of Rameau and the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, such as his recording of the ''Goldberg Variations'' made on a 1728 Christian Zell harpsichord. Gustavus Waltz
Gustavus Waltz ( fl. 1732–1759) was a German bass opera singer. Basing himself in England from 1732, he collaborated with Handel from 1733 when he appeared in ''La Semiramide riconosciuta'', an opera pasticcio. Like Handel, Waltz took British nationality.. Waltz created roles in the oratorio ''Athalia'' (1733); and in the operas '' Arianna in Creta'' (1734), ''Ariodante'' (1735), ''Alcina'' (1735), and ''Atalanta'' (1736). As well as being a soloist, he sang in the chorus (for the last time in a 1754 performance of ''Messiah'' at the Foundling Hospital). He also taught singing: his students included Isabella Young. Laurence Cummings (born 1968, Birmingham) is a British harpsichordist, organist, and conductor. He is currently music director of the Academy of Ancient Music.
