Giovanni Torlonia, 1st Prince Di Civitella-Cesi
Giovanni Raimondo Torlonia (May 1755 – February 25, 1829) was a famous Franco-Italian banker to the Vatican and noble of the Torlonia family. In 1785 he inherited the fortune of his father Marino Torlonia (1725–1785; in early life Marin Torlonias, of Augerolles, France), who had become a successful businessman and banker in Rome. As a reward for the administration of the Vatican finances, in 1794 Pope Pius VI created Giovanni Torlonia Duke of Bracciano and Count of Pisciarelli; in 1803 Pope Pius VII further created him Marquis of Romavecchia and Turrita and 1st Prince (Princeps Romanus) of Civitella Cesi; in 1809 he was elevated to Patrician (with confirmation of that honor by Pius VII on January 19, 1813) and in 1820 became Duke of Poli and Guadagnolo, with other titles. He was the builder of the Villa Torlonia in Rome (started 1806), as well as other Torlonia villas. Villa Torlonia (Rome)
Villa Torlonia is a villa and surrounding gardens in Rome, Italy, formerly belonging to the Torlonia family. It is entered from the via Nomentana. Design It was designed by the Neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier. Construction began in 1806 for the banker Giovanni Torlonia (1756–1829) and was finished by his son Alessandro (1800–1880). History Mussolini rented it from the Torlonia for one lira a year to use as his state residence from the 1920s onwards. He and his family lived there for the next 18 years. It was abandoned after 1945, and allowed to decay in the following decades, but recent restoration work has allowed it to be opened to the public as a museum owned and operated by Rome's municipality. The House of Torlonia is the name of an Italian princely family from Rome, which acquired a huge fortune in the 18th and 19th centuries through administering the finances of the Vatican. The first influential member of the Torlonia family was Marino Torlonia (Tourlonias; 1725 – 21 March 1785), who rose from humble origins in the Auvergne region of France to become a very rich businessman and banker in Rome. Marino was born with the French name of Marin Torlonias, the son of Antoine Torlonias, a merchant and laborer. Marin's great-uncle was the parish priest of Augerolles, who procured for him a position as aide to an influential abbot.
