Giovanni Colonna (died 1245)
Giovanni Colonna (ca. 1170 – 28 January 1245) was a Cardinal (Catholicism), cardinal of the Catholic Church from the Rome, Roman noble family of Colonna. He is occasionally named "the Younger" to distinguish him from his near-contemporary cardinal Giovanni di San Paolo, who is frequently considered as related to the Colonna family. As papal legate, he accompanied the Latin Emperor Peter II of Courtenay to Greece, where he was taken captive by Theodore Komnenos Doukas. Released from captivity, Colonna served in 1220–21 as regent of the Latin Empire before returning to Italy in 1223. Giovanni Colonna (historian)
Fra Giovanni Colonna (1298? – 1343/44) was an Italian Dominican friar and scholar. Educated in France, he served as a preacher and vicar in Rome, chaplain in Cyprus and lector in Tivoli. He lived and worked in Avignon for a time and traveled widely in the Near East during his Cypriot period. An early humanist, he was a friend and correspondent of Petrarch, whose eight surviving letters to him are an important source for his later years, during which he suffered from gout. He wrote two works of history, ''Liber de viris illustribus'' ('Book of Famous Men') and ''Mare historiarum'' ('Sea of Histories'), the first during his time in Avignon and the second during his final years in Tivoli. Giovanni Colonna (1295, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy – 3 July 1348, Avignon, France) was a Roman Catholic cardinal during the Avignon papacy and was a scion of the famous Colonna family that played an important role in Italian history. Biography Giovanni Colonna was born in Rome around the year 1295 from Stefano Colonna il Vecchio and Insula Calcedonio. His brother Giacomo became a bishop. He was appointed Cardinal by Pope John XXII during the consistory of 18 December 1327 and granted the diaconate of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria. He participated in the Papal conclave of 1334 in which Pope Benedict XII was elected and that of 1342 in which Pope Clement VI was elected. During the conclave of 1342, he was head of the Italian cardinals who wanted the seat of the papacy to return to Rome. Giovanni Colonna (cardinal, 1456–1508)
Giovanni Colonna (1456 – 26 September 1508) was a Roman Catholic cardinal of the High Renaissance period, a member of the famous Colonna family. Biography Colonna was born in Rome in 1456, a grandson of Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna. He was created a cardinal by Pope Sixtus IV in the consistory of 15 May 1480 and was made bishop of Rieti on 10 November of that year. He participated in the conclaves of 1484, 1492, September 1503 and October 1503. Colonna died in 1508. Colonna's funeral oration was written by Battista Casali. Giovanni Paolo Colonna (16 June 1637 – 28 November 1695) was an Italian composer, teacher, organist and organ builder. In addition to being chapel-master and organist of San Petronio Basilica in Bologna, he served prominent members of the courts of Ferrara, Parma, Modena and Florence. He was a founder-member and president of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna. Emperor Leopold I collected manuscripts of his sacred music, which reflects the Roman church cantata style of Giacomo Carissimi and looks forward to the manner of George Frideric Handel. Giovanni Colonna (born September 4, 1934) is a contemporary Italian scholar of ancient Italy and, in particular, the Etruscan civilization. Biography Colonna is an emeritus professor at the Sapienza University of Rome where he has taught since 1980. He took his first degree at Rome in 1957, studying under Massimo Pallottino. He studied further at Rome and Athens and was then archaeological superintendent of south Etruria from 1964 until 1972. He has carried out numerous fieldwork campaigns in Etruria (Blera, Bisenzio, Bolsena, Montefiascone, Tuscania, Cerveteri, Ladispoli, Veii) and in other locations (Arcinazzo Romano, Saepinum, valle del Sinello, Festòs).
