Giovanni Battista Monteggia
Giovanni Battista Monteggia (1762 – 1815) was an Italians, Italian surgeon. The Monteggia fracture is named after him. Biography Early life Giovanni Battista Monteggia was born in Laveno-Mombello, Laveno, near the Lake Maggiore, Lago Maggiore (northern Italy) on August 8, 1762. His parents were Gian Antonio Monteggia and Marianna Vegezzi. Two brothers of his are known, one became a priest and the second a doctor. His father was occupied with the construction of infrastructures (mainly roads and aqueducts) and it was him who introduced Giovanni Battista, coming from a high school in Pallanza, to the field of medicine: Giovanni was admitted to the surgical school of the Ospedale Maggiore in Milan in 1779. His training was carried out on the background of the ideological and political conflicts of his time, between the revolutionary and the Napoleonic epoques. Laveno
Laveno-Mombello is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about northwest of Milan and about northwest of Varese. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 8,991 and an area of .All demographics and other statistics: Italian statistical institute Istat. It sits at the foot of Sasso del Ferro. History The name of Laveno comes from two denominations: the first is from the Latin word "labes", that means "landslide"; the second denominations is from the Roman general Titus Labienus, that give his name to the port (Portus Labienus) and subsequently to the surrounding area. The radix of the name are actually just in the main road of the town, via Labiena. Titus Labienus is considered responsible for naming Mombello too, after a battle against the Gauls ("mons belli" means "war hill").
