Giovan Leonardo Primavera
Giovan Leonardo Primavera (c. 1540–1585) was an Italian Renaissance composer and poet. Born in Barletta, he spent most of his working life in Naples, with some time in other Italian cities such as Venice, Milan, and Loreto. His works consist primarily of madrigals and three-voice ''napolitane'' (secular songs, of a light character, in Neapolitan dialect), based on texts by poets such as Petrarch, Sannazaro, and Tansillo, and a few by himself. His most famous work, the madrigal ''Nasce la gioja mia'', was the model for a parody mass by Palestrina. He was a friend of the composer Carlo Gesualdo Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa ( – 8 September 1613) was Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina ( – 2 February 1594) was an Italian composer of late Renaissance music. The central representative of the Roman School, with Orlande de Lassus and Tomás Luis de Victoria, Palestrina is considered the leading composer of late 16th-century Europe. Madrigal Composers
A madrigal is a form of secular vocal music most typical of the Renaissance (15th–16th c.) and early Baroque (1600–1750) periods, although revisited by some later European composers. The polyphonic madrigal is unaccompanied, and the number of voices varies from two to eight, but usually features three to six voices, whilst the metre of the madrigal varies between two or three tercets, followed by one or two couplets. Unlike the verse-repeating strophic forms sung to the same music, most madrigals are through-composed, featuring different music for each stanza of lyrics, whereby the composer expresses the emotions contained in each line and in single words of the poem being sung. Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa ( – 8 September 1613) was Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza. As a composer he is known for writing madrigals and pieces of sacred music that use a chromatic language not heard again until the late 19th century. He is also known for killing his first wife and her aristocratic lover upon finding them ''in flagrante delicto''. Biography Early life Gesualdo's family had acquired the principality of Venosa in what is now the Province of Potenza, Southern Italy, in 1560. He was probably born on March 30, 1566, three years after his older brother Luigi, though some sources have stated that he was born on March 8. A parody mass is a musical setting of the mass, typically from the 16th century, that uses multiple voices of another pre-existing piece of music, such as a fragment of a motet or a secular ''chanson'', as part of its melodic material. It is distinguished from the two other most prominent types of mass composition during the Renaissance, the ''cantus firmus'' and the paraphrase mass. Barletta () is a city, ''comune'' of Apulia, in south eastern Italy. Barletta is the capoluogo, together with Andria and Trani, of the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. Tansillo
Luigi Tansillo (1510–1568) was an Italian poet of the Petrarchian school. Born in Venosa, he entered the service of Pedro Álvarez de Toledo in 1536 and in 1540 entered the Accademia degli Umidi, soon renamed Accademia Fiorentina. He was associated with the Court of Naples and served as Captain of Justice at Gaeta. His work ''Il vendemmiatore'', written in his youth, was considered licentious enough to be placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum by Pope Paul IV.
