Giorgos Oikonomou
Georgios "Giorgos" Oikonomou (alternate spellings: ''Ikonomou'', ''Economou'', ''Ekonomou''; Greek: Γεώργιος "Γιώργος" Οικονόμου) is a retired Greek basketball player. Club career As a basketball player, he was 2.03 m. tall and the first center in Greece taller than 2 metres. During his career, he was the most valuable player of PAOK. He led his team to win its first Greek Basket League championship in 1959. At the final game against Aris Thessaloniki Oikonomou scored 25 points, 19 being in the second half and helped his team to win the game 66–58. Moreover, Oikonomou was the third scorer of Greek Basket League in 1965 and 1970. In April 2015, PAOK awarded Oikonomou for his offer to the club. The Greek Basket League (GBL), often also referred to as the Greek A1 Basketball League, or Greek Basketball Championship (originally called Panhellenic Basketball Championship), and also known as the Stoiximan Basket League for sponsorship reasons, is the first tier level professional basketball league in Greece. It is run by HEBA ( el, ΕΣΑΚΕ, link=no), under the legal authority of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (E.O.K.). It is the highest-tier level of the Greek league system. The Greece men's national basketball team ( el, Eθνική Oμάδα Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ελλάδος) represents Greece in international basketball. They are controlled by the Hellenic Basketball Federation, the governing body for basketball in Greece. Greece is currently ranked ninth in the FIBA World Rankings. Greece appeared eight times at the FIBA World Cup, their best performance coming in 2006 as runners-up, after beating the United States 101–95 in the tournament's semi-final.
