Gimli, Manitoba
Gimli is an unincorporated community in the Rural Municipality of Gimli on the west side of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. The community's first European settlers were Icelanders who were part of the New Iceland settlement in Manitoba. The community maintains a strong connection to Iceland and Icelandic culture today, including the annual Icelandic Festival. It was incorporated as a village on March 6, 1908, and held List of towns in Manitoba, town status between December 31, 1946, and January 1, 2003, when it amalgamated with the RM of Gimli. Census Canada now recognizes the community as a Census geographic units of Canada#Population centres, population centre for census purposes. The Rural Municipality of Gimli is a rural municipality located in the Interlake Region of south-central Manitoba, Canada, on the western shore of Lake Winnipeg. It is about north of the provincial capital Winnipeg. The rural municipality's population in the 2016 Canadian Census was 6,181, making it the 12th largest rural municipality by population. The RM of Gimli has an area of , making it the sixth smallest rural municipality by area. The unincorporated community of Gimli and the surrounding district were once an Icelandic ethnic block settlement, and the area, known as ''New Iceland'', is home to the largest concentration of people of Icelandic ancestry outside Iceland. Gimli was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1899, and existed continuously until the 2019 election. Gimli was located to the immediate north of the City of Winnipeg. It was bordered to the north by Interlake, to the west by Interlake and Lakeside, and to the east by Lake Winnipeg and Selkirk. Communities in the riding included Gimli, Winnipeg Beach, Petersfield, Clandeboye and Matlock. The riding's population in 1996 was 19,700. In 1999, the average family income was $58,790, and the unemployment rate was 7.90%. RCAF Station Gimli was an air station of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) located near Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. Gimli Industrial Park Airport is a civilian airport and former military field located west of Gimli, Manitoba, Canada. It now operates as a civilian airport, with one of the original parallel runways decommissioned and now a significant portion of Gimli Motorsports Park. Flying-related activities here include use by the Manitoba government's water bomber squadron, the Gimli Cadet Flying Site, Interlake Aviation flight school and charter service, and a helicopter charter and training company. Gimli is also used by No. 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron based out of No. 17 Wing Winnipeg, for training purposes, and as a skydive drop zone by Skydive Manitoba. Gimli is a fictional character in J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, appearing as a member of the Fellowship of the Ring in ''The Lord of the Rings''. Gimli is a mountain summit located in the Valhalla Ranges of the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. Gimli Peak is a mountain summit located in the Valhalla Ranges of the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. Gimli Peak is the fourth-highest point in the Valhalla Ranges, with the highest being Gladsheim Peak, to the north. Its nearest higher peak is Midgard Peak, to the northwest. In Norse mythology, Gimlé (alternately Gimli as in Icelandic) is a place where the worthy survivors of Ragnarök are foretold to live. It is mentioned in the ''Prose Edda'' and the Eddic poem "Völuspá" and described as the most beautiful place in Asgard, more beautiful than the sun. Etymology The meaning of the name is "fire-lea" or "fire-shelter", or in scholar Lee M. Hollander's view, more likely "gem-roof".
