Gilze en Rijen () is a municipality in the southern Netherlands. The municipality contains four villages: Rijen, Gilze, Hulten and Molenschot. It is home to the Gilze-Rijen Air Base. Gilze-Rijen Air Base
Gilze-Rijen Air Base ( nl, Vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen, ) is a military airbase in the south of Netherlands. It is located between the cities of Breda and Tilburg, which are both in North Brabant. The airport is mainly, but not exclusively used as a base for Royal Netherlands Air Force helicopters. The airfield has two runways, the longest one is complete with an instrument landing system (ILS) and is long by wide in the 10/28 direction. The shorter runway (without ILS) is by in the 02/20 direction. History Gilze-Rijen Air Base is the oldest airfield in the Netherlands, the first aircraft to have landed there being a Blériot in 1910. The first military aircraft activity dates back to 1913, when a Farman aircraft used the field for military exercises which established it as a military airfield. Gilze-Rijen Railway Station
Gilze-Rijen is a railway station located in Rijen, Netherlands in the municipality Gilze en Rijen. Although the railway station is located in Rijen, it's called Gilze-Rijen because of the Gilze-Rijen Air Base, just south of Rijen. The station was opened on 5 October 1863 and is located on the Breda–Eindhoven railway between Breda and Tilburg. The station is operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen. Rijen
Rijen is the largest place in the Dutch municipality of Gilze en Rijen. The city hall is located here. Rijen is situated north of the A58, between Breda and Tilburg. Surrounding places are: Dorst, Dongen and Oosterhout. History Rijen has been a hamlet of Gilze for years, which belonged to the Barony of Breda. In 1464 a chapel was added to this hamlet and was raised to an independent parish. Rijen stayed smaller than Gilze for a long time. In the period of 1831-1838, during the Belgian Revolution, many Dutch soldiers were encamped at Rijen. A few years later, in 1863, the Gilze-Rijen station was opened. This gave the opportunity for the industry to grow. Especially the leather industry grew very fast and the town with it. Henriette Johanna Cornelia Maria Barones van Lynden-Leijten (9 October 1950, Gilze en Rijen – 5 November 2010, Sint Oedenrode) was a Dutch diplomat. Marcellin Theeuwes
Marcellin Theeuwes (12 May 1936 – 2 January 2019) was a Dutch Carthusian monk. From a very young age, Theeuwes was attracted by the monastic vocation and enrolled at the (now defunct) Mariënkroon Abbey (nl). He joined the Carthusians in 1961 and entered into the Sélignac Charterhouse in December of that year. He was ordained a priest on 25 June 1966. He then went to the Our Lady of Mougères Monastery, and later to the Chartreuse de Montrieux (fr). In June 1997, he was sent to the Grande Chartreuse and elected General Minister of the Carthusians, succeeding Dom Poisson. He was the 72nd General Minister after Saint Bruno and the fourth Dutchman. He resigned as General Minister in 2012, citing health concerns. Pope Benedict XVI granted his resignation request. He was succeeded by Dom François-Marie Velut. Janus Theeuwes
Adrianus "Janus" Cornelis Theeuwes (4 April 1886 – 7 August 1975) was an archer from the Netherlands. He owned a leather factory (Theeuwes Van de Maade) and was father of seven daughters and one son. His son, Huub, succeeded him. He was born in Gilze en Rijen and died in Tilburg. He represented his native country at the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.
