Gilston is a rural residential locality in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , Gilston had a population of 2,459 people. Geography The western boundary of the suburb is marked by the Nerang River. History Settlement began in the 1860s with dairying and timber being the main industries. Mr Bryant, a local storekeeper, named the district Gilston after Gilston in England. Nerang Upper Provisional School opened on 1 June 1881. In 1903, it became Gilston Provisional School. In 1908 it became Gilston State School. The school was at 636 Gilston Road () until 1985 when increasing enrolments resulted in a new school campus being constructed in Worongary Street. In 1996, funds were raised to relocate the original school building onto the new campus. The first telephone office opened in March 1923. H2 Hinde Tree
The H2 Hinde Tree is a heritage-listed tree of the species ''Macadamia integrifolia'' at Colliston, 926 Gilston Road, Gilston, City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 14 August 2008. History The H2 Hinde tree is located on Colliston, a former farm in the Gold Coast hinterland about nine kilometres southwest of Nerang in the Gilston district. It is the parent of a variety (see note below) of the species Macadamia integrifolia and was probably planted in the 1920s. It was registered by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock in 1960 as a scion wood (see note below) and in the two decades after that time, a significant number of commercial orchards in the State propagated trees using material from this tagged parent tree, it being one of only two Australian-developed varieties to have then achieved such a status. Hoon
A hoon is an Australian term describing a person who deliberately drives a vehicle in a reckless or dangerous manner, generally in order to provoke a reaction from onlookers. Hoon activities (or hooning) can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts, or screeching tyres. Those commonly identified as being involved in hooning are young and predominantly male drivers in the age range of 17 to 25 years. Hoon control laws are beginning to be extended to dangerous hoon behaviour using boats and other vessels, particularly jet skis. The Australian state of Victoria passed legislation in late 2009 to control hoon activities using recreational vessels. Electoral District Of Albert
Albert was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland which existed from 1887 to 1949 and 1959 to 2017. Albert was named for the Albert River, which runs through the electorate and separates Logan City from City of Gold Coast. It was first created in a redistribution in 1887 ahead of the 1888 colonial election and continued to exist (with various boundary alterations) until 1949, when the Darlington and Southport electorates were created. In 1959, the electorate was established again. The 1971 and 1977 redistributions greatly reduced the area of the electorate and minor changes were made in 1991, including the loss of Carbrook in the north and coastal areas below Paradise Point in the south. Its consistently changing boundaries together with its existence in a high-growth area do not provide consistent political leanings over time, although it showed more inclination towards the Labor Party over time than any other Gold Coast seat.
