Gilman Square
Gilman Square is a neighborhood in the area around Central Hill in Somerville, Massachusetts. Historic Gilman Square is at the junction of Medford, Pearl, and Marshall streets and has been a small commercial center since the mid 19th-century but with the development of the Gilman Square Green Line station, city planning documents consider the area within a rough ten-minute walk of the new station to be part of the Gilman Square neighborhood. Neighborhood lines are fuzzy and Gilman Square is sometimes considered part of the extensive Winter Hill neighborhood. The area has also been referred to as Central Hill, and distinct from Winter Hill to the north, Spring Hill to the southwest, and Prospect Hill to the southeast. Gilman Square Station
Gilman Square station is a light rail station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Green Line located at Gilman Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. The accessible station has a single island platform serving the two tracks of the Medford Branch. It opened on December 12, 2022, as part of the Green Line Extension (GLX), which added two northern branches to the Green Line, and is served by the E branch. The location was previously served by railroad stations. The Boston and Lowell Railroad (B&L) opened a station at Winter Hill in 1863; it was rebuilt in 1886–1888. The station was served by the Boston and Maine Railroad, successor to the B&L, until 1937. Extensions to the Green Line were proposed throughout the 20th century, most with Winter Hill as one of the intermediate stations. Winter Hill, Somerville, Massachusetts
Winter Hill is a neighborhood in Somerville, Massachusetts. It gets its name from the 120-foot hill that occupies its landscape, the name of which dates back to the 18th century. Winter Hill is located roughly north of Medford Street, west of McGrath Highway, and east of Magoun Square. History An early map of the area (dated 1637) from the papers of the family of John Winthrop includes some of this neighborhood and the adjacent Ten Hills section. A Map of the Battle of Bunker Hill from 1775 displays Winter Hill to the northwest, with woody and marshy regions beyond. A map by Henry Pelham published in 1777 includes the Winter Hill Fort as part of the "Military Works" in the area. The Winter Hill Fort was described as "extensive" among other American Revolutionary War installations, but little evidence of the structural features remains. The Boston and Lowell Railroad was a railroad that operated in Massachusetts in the United States. It was one of the first railroads in North America and the first major one in the state. The line later operated as part of the Boston and Maine Railroad's Southern Division. Formation The Boston and Lowell Railroad was preceded by the Middlesex Canal. Converting the canal to a railroad would eliminate the issue of transportation being unavailable during the winter, when the canal froze. Patrick Tracy Jackson led the task of convincing the state legislature to fund the project. This proved difficult, as the investors of the Middlesex Canal were against building a new form of transportation designed to replace their canal. Because, prior to 1872, there was no provision in Massachusetts state law for chartering railroads, all had to be chartered by special acts of legislature.
