Gijs Van Heumen
Gijs van Heumen (born 23 July 1952) is a retired field hockey coach from the Netherlands. He was in charge of the Dutch National Women's Team from 1980 to 1989, bringing it to one Olympic (1984), two world (1983 and 1986) and two European titles (1984 and 1987); the 1980 Games were boycotted by the Netherlands, whereas in 1988 the women's team won bronze. Van Heumen's father Wim coached the national men's field hockey team between 1975 and 1986. His innovations to Dutch hockey, such as using artificial grass and combining plays on grass in summer and indoors in winter, were followed by his son. Furthermore, Gijs intensified physical training of the team and almost doubled its daily training time. After voluntarily stepping out as national coach, between 1993 and 1997 van Heumen worked as a technical director of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Hockey Bond. s-Hertogenbosch (), colloquially known as Den Bosch (), is a city and municipality in the Netherlands with a population of 157,486. Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format, in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Teams must drive a round hockey ball by hitting it with a hockey stick towards the rival team's shooting circle and then into the goal. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. The stick is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat; only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. The Netherlands' national women's field hockey team is currently number one on the FIH world rankings and the reigning world champion. Wim Van Heumen
Wilhelmus "Wim" Maria van Heumen (28 October 1928 – 31 January 1992) was a field hockey coach from the Netherlands, who was in charge of the Dutch National Men's Team from 1975 to 1986. Career Van Heumen graduated in 1954 with a degree in physical education. Beginning in 1956 he taught this subject at the Academy of Physical Education in Tilburg. In 1966 he became a coach with the field hockey club of 's-Hertogenbosch and later a national coach with a first match played on 19 July 1975. He retired from this position in April 1986 after supervising 232 matches with 139 wins and 35 draws. Van Heumen introduced new elements to Dutch hockey such as playing on artificial grass and combining summer training on grass with winter plays indoors. Artificial Grass
Artificial turf is a surface of synthetic fibers made to look like natural grass. It is most often used in arenas for sports that were originally or are normally played on grass. However, it is now being used on residential lawns and commercial applications as well. The main reason is maintenanceartificial turf stands up to heavy use, such as in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming. Domed, covered, and partially covered stadiums may require artificial turf because of the difficulty of getting grass enough sunlight to stay healthy. The Royal Dutch Hockey Association ( nl, Koninklijke Nederlandse Hockey Bond, KNHB) is the official governing body of Field hockey in the Netherlands. It governs both the indoor and outdoor field hockey leagues, as well as the Netherlands national field hockey team and the Netherlands women's national field hockey team.
