Gordon Giesbrecht
Gordon Grant Giesbrecht is a Canadian physiologist who operates the Laboratory for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at the University of Manitoba in Manitoba, Canada. He studies the effects of extreme environments, including cold, heat, hypoxia, and hypobaria on the human body. His laboratory motto is ''vitas salvantas'' (saving lives). He was dubbed "Professor Popsicle" in a feature article in ''Outside Magazine''. Dr. Giesbrecht ran unsuccessfully as the Conservative Party of Canada's candidate for Winnipeg South in the 2015 Canadian federal election. Mark Giesbrecht
Mark Giesbrecht is a Canadian computer scientist who is the 12th dean of the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics, starting from July 1, 2020. He was the Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada from July 2014 until June 2020. Biography Giesbrecht earned a PhD in computer science at the University of Toronto in 1993, under the supervision of Joachim von zur Gathen. He has been a professor at the University of Waterloo since 2001, following positions at the University of Manitoba (1994–98) and University of Western Ontario (1998–2001), as well as IBM Canada Ltd. (1991–93). He was the Director of the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at Waterloo from July 2014 until June 2020. On July 1, 2020, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. Helmut Giesbrecht
Helmut Giesbrecht (February 18, 1943 – October 9, 2020) was an educator and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Skeena in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1991 to 2001 as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. Career Giesbrecht was born in Ukraine. He was educated at the University of British Columbia and taught in Terrace, British Columbia for 24 years. Giesbrecht was a member of the Terrace City Council, serving as mayor from 1981 to 1985. He was also a member of the executive of the Terrace District's Teachers Union, served as president of the Terrace District Teachers' Association and was a director for the Terrace and District Credit Union. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister responsible for the Public Service and Minister of Transportation and Highways. Wilhelm Giesbrecht
Wilhelm Giesbrecht (1854–1913) was a Prussian zoologist, specialising in copepods, during the "golden age of copepodology". Giesbrecht was born in Gdańsk in 1854, and was educated in Kiel, where in 1881 he earned a Ph.D. in Baltic copepods under Professor Karl Möbius. He then moved to Naples to work at the zoological station there, staying there for the remainder of his life. His most famous work is the 1892 monograph Systematik und Faunistik der pelagischen Copepoden des Golfes von Neapel und der angrenzenden Meeres-Abschnitte' ("Systematics and faunistics of the pelagic copepods of the Gulf of Naples and neighbouring seas").
