Giarabub (film)
''Giarabub'' is a 1942 Italian war film directed by Goffredo Alessandrini and starring Carlo Ninchi, Mario Ferrari and Doris Duranti.Gundle p.237 The film was a propaganda work which portrayed the Siege of Giarabub (1940–41) during the Second World War, in which Italian troops defended Jaghbub, Libya for nine months against British forces. Goffredo Alessandrini
Goffredo Alessandrini (20 November 1904, in Cairo – 16 May 1978, in Rome) was an Italian scriptwriter and film director. He also acted, edited, and produced some films. He practiced athletics in his youth, and won a title of Italian champion on 110 meters hurdles in 1925. Biography He started in films collaborating with Alessandro Blasetti and was one of the most important film directors under Italian Fascism. His films received several awards at the Venice Film Festival during the Fascist era: the Mussolini Cup for Best Italian film in 1938, for ''Luciano Serra pilota'', and in 1939 for ''Abuna Messias''. He received the Biennale Award in 1942, for ''Noi Vivi'' and ''Addio Kira!'' His most remembered and important works are two anti-Communist films (combined to comprise 4 hours), both based on Ayn Rand's ''We the Living''. Emilio Cigoli
Emilio Cardi Cigoli (18 November 1909 – 7 November 1980) was an Italian actor and voice actor. Biography Cigoli was born in Livorno to actress Giovanna Cigoli. His grandfather worked as a silent film actor. He began his career on stage at the age of 18 under the guidance of Alfredo De Sanctis and later did work for the EIAR. Cigoli appeared in more than 40 films and 20 television shows between 1935 and 1980, mostly in supporting roles. One of his major appearances was in the 1943 film ''The Children Are Watching Us'' as well as the 1950 film '' Sunday in August''. Between 1943 and 1945, he worked in Spain with several colleagues to star in two Spanish-Italian films. Cigoli found great success as a voice dubber, eventually doing voice work for over seven thousand films. is a character created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. He is the title character of the ''Mario'' franchise and the mascot of Japanese video game company Nintendo. Erminio Spalla
Erminio Spalla (7 July 1897 – 14 August 1971) was an Italian professional heavyweight Boxer (boxing), boxer, film actor and singer. Spalla studied fine arts in Brera (district of Milan), Brera, when in 1910 he saw film footage of the world boxing championships and decided to become a professional boxer. He was the first Italian to win a European boxing title, which he did in 1923. He lost it in 1926 to Paulino Uzcudun and retired from boxing the next year, though he briefly returned to the ring in 1934 and won all three of his final bouts. He returned to art after retiring from the ring. In October 1937 he debuted as an opera singer in ''Nel Trovatore'' in Turin. In the same year he also worked in sculpture and painting. Salvatore Castagna
Salvatore Castagna ( Caltagirone, 14 January 1897 – Rome, 3 February 1977) was an officer in the Royal Italian Army during World War II, most notable for his leadership during the siege of Giarabub. After the war he became a general in the postwar Italian Army. Biography Salvatore Castagna was born in Caltagirone, in the province of Catania, on January 14, 1897. At the outbreak of the First World War he enlisted as a volunteer in the Royal Italian Army, with the rank of second lieutenant. In November 1915 he received his baptism of fire on Mount Civaron (Valsugana), being promoted to lieutenant for the courage shown in action, and in 1917 he was awarded the Silver Medal of Military Valor for an action on the Karst Plateau. Jaghbub, Libya
Jaghbub ( ar, الجغبوب) is a remote desert village in the Al Jaghbub Oasis in the eastern Libyan Desert. It is actually closer to the Egyptian town of Siwa than to any Libyan town of note. The oasis is located in Butnan District and was the administrative seat of the Jaghbub Basic People's Congress. Supported by reservoirs of underground water and date production, the town is best known for its hard-won self-sufficiency. Idris of Libya was born in Jaghbub on 12 March 1890. Geography The Jaghbub oasis is located in a deep depression that extends below sea level. This depression, an area lower than the surrounding region, reaches to about -10 m.
