Gianluigi Di Franco
Gianluigi Di Franco (5 January 1953, in Capri – 19 March 2005, in Naples) was an Italian singer. In the early 1970s he joined the brothers Corrado and Danilo Rustici and formed the progressive rock band Cervello. The group disbanded after one album and Di Franco spent the 1970s working in a psychiatric hospital in Naples as a musicotherapist In the early 1980s Di Franco resumed his music career. He collaborated with percussionist Tony Esposito, singing lead vocals on "Kalimba de luna" (1984) and "As Tu As" (1985). He also worked with Tullio De Piscopo and Mory Kanté on the single "Radio Africa" (1986). Cervello
Cervello ("Brain") is a band from Italy. History Cervello was formed by musicians from Naples. Corrado Rustici, then 17 years old, was the younger brother of Danilo Rustici, who was the guitarist of another popular rock band from Naples of these years, the Osanna. In 1973 the band released their sole album ''Melos'', a brilliant Italian symphonic progressive rock production. The band show good mastery of their instruments, dazzling in sometimes over-complicated passages. Flutes and saxophones are often used to replace the keyboards and mellotron of many progressive works from this era. In spite of critical praise the band broke up in 1974. Corrado Rustici, after a brief stint with the Osanna, and a lengthy tenure with Nova, started a successful career as a solo musician and producer. Tony Esposito (musician)
Antonio Esposito (born 15 July 1950) is an Italian singer, songwriter and musician. Career Esposito was born in Naples. He started playing percussions in his teenage years. In the early 1970s, he played sessions and recorded with musicians such as Alan Sorrenti, Don Cherry, Don Moye, Gato Barbieri, Eumir Deodato, Brian Auger, Gilberto Gil and Pino Daniele. In 1975 he recorded his first solo album, ''Rosso napoletano'', in collaboration with Paul Buckmaster. Esposito is mostly well known for his 1984 hit single " Kalimba de Luna" from his album ''Il grande esploratore''. After winning the Un disco per l'estate music festival, it charted in Italy and Switzerland, and a cover by Boney M reached No. 17 in Germany. In 1987, his single "Papa Chico" was No. 2 in The Netherlands for 5 weeks and No. 3 in Belgium for 2 weeks. Kalimba De Luna
"Kalimba de Luna" is a 1984 single by Italian musician and drummer Tony Esposito. It was written by Esposito with his long-time collaborator Remo Licastro, pianist Giuseppe "Joe" Amoruso, keyboardist Mauro Malavasi and vocalist Gianluigi Di Franco. It was taken from Esposito's album ''Il grande esploratore'' (The great explorer). "Kalimba de Luna" was a European success and reached no. 3 in the Austrian chart, no. 6 in the Swiss charts and no. 14 in the Italian charts. Charts Boney M. version "Kalimba de Luna" was instantly covered by German group Boney M. for the German market, giving the group their first Top 20 hit in three years, peaking at no. 16. Tullio De Piscopo
Tullio De Piscopo (born 24 February 1946 in Naples, Italy) is an Italian drummer, percussionist and singer- songwriter. De Piscopo was born in Naples. His father was an orchestra percussionist. In 1969 he moved to Turin and two years later he moved to Milan, where he joined the Franco Cerri quintet. He later began a successful career as session drummer, playing with many international artists, including Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Stéphane Grappelli, Massimo Urbani, Gil Evans, Slide Hampton, Don Costa, Tony Scott, Ástor Piazzolla, Aldemaro Romero, Gato Barbieri, Eumir Deodato, Mina, Lucio Dalla, Franco Battiato, Fabrizio De André, Pino Daniele, Manu Chao and others. Between the 1970s and 1980s, De Piscopo played on several occasions with bassist-arranger Pino Presti, with whom he established one of the top rhythm sessions in the Italian music scene. Mory Kanté
Mory Kanté (29 March 195022 May 2020) was a Guinean vocalist and player of the kora harp. He was best known internationally for his 1987 hit song "Yé ké yé ké", which reached number-one in Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, and Spain. The album it came from, ''Akwaba Beach'', was the best-selling African record of its time. Early life Kanté was born in Albadaria, French Guinea (a part of French West Africa at the time) on 29 March 1950. His father was El Hadj Djeli Fodé Kanté and his mother, Fatouma Kamissoko, was a singer. They were one of Guinea's best known families of griot (hereditary) musicians. He was of mixed Malian and Guinean descent. After being brought up in the Mandinka griot tradition in Guinea, he was sent to Mali at the age of seven years – where he learned to play the kora, as well as important voice traditions, some of which are necessary to become a griot. ''Melos'' is a progressive rock album released in 1973 by the Italian band Cervello. The lyrics focus around an interpretation of the singing from a Greek mythology point of view. The music is a successful fusion of Mediterranean sounds with typical complex progressive rock ones, as well as with experimental parts. Flutes are dominant in much of the songs, as four members of the band played that instrument.
