Giani Sher Singh, born in January 1890 in Thikriwala, in Punjab, India was a political leader and newspaper editor. As a result of his extensive knowledge for Sikhism, he came to be known as ''Giani''. Early life Giani Sher Singh was born in January 1890 in the village of Thikriwala in the Sangrur district of the Punjab (now Barnala) to Waryam Singh and Nand Kaur. He lost his eyesight due to smallpox Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by variola virus (often called smallpox virus) which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus. Thikriwala (Barnala)
Thikriwala is a village in Barnala district in Indian state of Punjab, India, Punjab. It is located 5 km away from Barnala. It is among the largest and oldest villages in Punjab. In Punjabi language ''thikri'' means ''shard'', so this village gets its name because people of vast gotra and casts live here. Thikriwala is birthplace of freedom fighter Sardar Sewa Singh Thikriwala, the ancestor of Jagmeet Singh leader of New Democratic Party Canada. A gyani or giani ( Punjabi: ਗਿਆਨੀ ) is an honorific Sikh title used by someone learned in the Sikh religion and who often leads the congregation in prayers, such as Ardas, or in singing ( kirtan). Sangrur district is in the state of Punjab in northern India. Sangrur city is the district headquarters. It is one of the five districts in Patiala Division in the Indian state of Punjab. Smallpox
Smallpox was an infectious disease caused by variola virus (often called smallpox virus) which belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus. The last naturally occurring case was diagnosed in October 1977, and the World Health Organization (WHO) certified the global eradication of the disease in 1980, making it the only human disease to be eradicated. The initial symptoms of the disease included fever and vomiting. This was followed by formation of ulcers in the mouth and a skin rash. Over a number of days, the skin rash turned into the characteristic fluid-filled blisters with a dent in the center. The bumps then scabbed over and fell off, leaving scars.
