Ghukas Madoyan
Ghukas Karapetovich Madoyan (; ; – 11 June 1975) was a Red Army officer awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Born in Kars Oblast in modern-day Turkey, Madoyan fought in the Russian Civil War with the Red Army and was demobilized afterwards. He worked in the public catering and cooperative sectors and briefly rejoined the army as an officer in the early 1930s. Madoyan was called up again in 1940 and fought in World War II. For leading a battalion in the defense of a key rail junction during the recapture of Rostov-on-Don in early 1943, he was made a Hero of the Soviet Union. After graduating from the Frunze Military Academy, Madoyan became a regimental commander and was seriously wounded in Poland in late 1944, resulting in his discharge from the army. Postwar, he was active in the Communist Party of Armenia (Soviet Union), Communist Party of Armenia and served as the Minister of Social Welfare of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. Kars Oblast
The Kars Oblast was a province (''oblast'') of the Caucasus Viceroyalty of the Russian Empire between 1878 and 1917. Its capital was the city of Kars, presently in Turkey. The ''oblast'' bordered the Ottoman Empire to the west, the Batum Oblast (in 1883–1903 part of the Kutaisi Governorate) to the north, the Tiflis Governorate to the northeast, and the Erivan Governorate to the east.
