Ghost Fleet Overlord
Ghost Fleet Overlord is a fleet of test unmanned surface vehicles operated by the U.S. Navy. Ghost Fleet Overlord is being developed by the Department of Defense’s Strategic Capabilities Office. It is a partnership between the Defense Department's Strategic Capabilities Office and the Navy. Vessels As of August 2022, the fleet consists of three ships delivered, the first is USV Ranger, the second is USV Nomad, and the third is USV Mariner. The fourth ship will be USV Vanguard and is being built by Austal USA. In June 2021, there were two additional Ghost Fleet Overlord prototype USVs under construction and will be used to expand and accelerate the Navy’s experimentation and testing. While technically "uncrewed", the ships carry a crew of six human sailors. Most of the ship's functions are automated, but can be carried out manually by the onboard human crew if the need arises. Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), also known as unmanned surface vessels, autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) in some cases, uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), or colloquially drone ships, or robot boats, are boats or ships that operate on the surface of the water without a crew. USVs operate with various levels of autonomy, from remote control to fully autonomous. Some commercial USVs may utilize COLREGs-compliant navigation. USVs were used militarily as early as World War II for remote controlled target craft and minesweeper purposes, they are becoming more widely used in the twenty-first century for a range of purposes including oceanography and environmental monitoring, as well as cargo transport, and military applications. The United States Naval Institute (USNI) is a private non-profit military association that offers independent, nonpartisan forums for debate of national security issues. Aegis Combat System
The Aegis Combat System is an American integrated naval weapons system developed by the Missile and Surface Radar Division of RCA, and it is now produced by Lockheed Martin. Initially used by the United States Navy, Aegis is now used also by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Spanish Navy, Royal Norwegian Navy, Republic of Korea Navy, and Royal Australian Navy, and is planned for use by the Royal Canadian Navy.
