Gherardi is a surname of Northern Italian origin. It is most common in the regions of Emilia-Romagna, Lombardy and Tuscany. USS ''Gherardi'' (DD-637/DMS-30), a , is the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Rear Admiral Bancroft Gherardi. ''Gherardi'' was launched on 12 February 1942 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard, sponsored by Mrs. Christopher Robinson, granddaughter of Rear Admiral Bancroft Gherardi; and commissioned on 15 September 1942. Service history Atlantic and Mediterranean service In December 1942 ''Gherardi'' suffered fatalities in a storm. Francesca Gherardi
Francesca Gherardi (12 November 1955 – 14 February 2013) was an Italian zoologist, ethologist, and ecologist. Most of her work was performed at the Department of Biology of the University of Florence, Italy, where she was a researcher and an associate professor. Early life and education Gherardi became interested in crustaceans as a teen, when one of her friends had a tropical aquarium. She obtained a master's degree in Biology in 1979 from the University of Florence with a thesis on aggressive behaviour, dominance hierarchies and individual recognition in decapods. She gained her PhD in Animal Biology (Ethology) at the University of Florence with a dissertation on the eco-ethology of the freshwater crab ''Potamon fluviatile''. Bancroft Gherardi
Bancroft Gherardi (November 10, 1832 – December 10, 1903) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy, who served during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. Even though his family hailed from French Corsica, because of his Italian surname (typical of Corsicans) he had the distinction of being the first Italian-American admiral in the United States Navy. Gherardi Davis (October 15, 1858 – March 9, 1941) was an American lawyer, book author and politician from New York. Life He was born on October 15, 1858 in San Francisco, California, the son of George Henry Davis (1824–1897) and Clara Jane (Gherardi) Davis (1827–1897). Antonio Gherardi
Antonio Gherardi (''Il Reatino'') (20 September 1638 – 10 May 1702) was an Italian painter, architect, and sculptor (stuccoist) of the Baroque style, active mainly in and near Rome and his native city of Rieti. Life Antonio was born in Rieti to Stefano and Giulia Poggi Tatoti, but when he moved to Rome (c. 1656) he changed his name. His father, a middle-class craftsman, died when Antonio was only eight years old. In 1656, Monsignor Bulgarino Bulgarini, Governor of Rieti, became his patron. Two years later Bulgarini sponsored his travel to Rome, and introduced him to his future mentors, Pier Francesco Mola and Pietro da Cortona. In the large workshops organized by the latter, he developed skills in both painting and stucco decoration. Cristofano or Cristoforo Gherardi, also known as il Doceno, (November 25, 1508 – April 1556) was an Italian painter of the late-Renaissance or Mannerist period, active mainly in Florence and Tuscany. Biography He was born in Borgo San Sepolcro and also called ''il Doceno dal Borgo''. He was the pupil of the painter Raffaellino del Colle, in whose shop he encountered Rosso Fiorentino and Giorgio Vasari. He painted under Vasari's direction, the one assistant of Vasari's whom Freedberg singles out. Filippo Gherardi
Filippo Gherardi (1643–1704) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Born in Lucca, he was mostly active in Venice and Rome, where he became a member of the large studio of Pietro da Cortona, often working closely with Giovanni Coli. With Coli, Gherardi was initially a trainee of Pietro Paolini in Lucca. One of his masterpieces are the ceiling frescoes in the Palazzo Colonna in Rome, celebrating the participation of a family member in the ''Battle of Lepanto''. In Venice, Coli and Gherardi also completed frescoes (1670–72) of the dome of the church of ''San Nicolò da Tolentino'' with a fresco of the ''Glory of San Nicola'' and in the church of San Pantalon. Piero Gherardi (20 November 1909 – 8 June 1971) was the Costume and Set Designer of Federico Fellini's ''La Dolce Vita'' and ''8½'', winning an Oscar for each film in the category of Best Costume Design.
