Gheorghe Popescu I
Gheorghe Popescu (8 August 1919 – 1 January 2001) was a Romanian footballer and also a manager. He played as a striker. International career Gheorghe Popescu I played 6 friendly games at international level for Romania, making his debut under Constantin Rădulescu in a 2–1 home victory against Belgium. He scored his only goal in a 2–1 away victory against Yugoslavia. Popescu's last appearance was in a 2–2 against Slovakia. Managerial career Gheorghe Popescu was a successful manager, training in his career only two teams, Steaua București and Romania national football team. After retiring as manager, he was the President of Romanian Football Federation and the vice-president of Steaua București. Gheorghe Popescu
Gheorghe "Gică" Popescu (; born 9 October 1967) is a Romanian former professional football who played as a defender. He notably played in La Liga where he is a former captain of FC Barcelona. He played for a string of European clubs in that period, including a four-year stint at PSV Eindhoven and winning the UEFA Cup with Galatasaray. He also played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, in Serie A with Lecce and in the Bundesliga with Hannover 96. In his native country he played for Universitatea Craiova, Steaua București and Dinamo București. Beside from his defending skills, he was also capable starting attacks His tactical knowledge as a defender made him a valuable team member in top European competitions until he reached his late-thirties. Alexandru Apolzan
Alexandru Apolzan (6 February 1927 – 23 December 1982) was a Romanian footballer, who played as a defender, mainly for Steaua București and also for Romania. He has been credited with the invention of the sweeper role and is considered one of the best sweepers in the history of Romanian football, with only Miodrag Belodedici and Gheorghe Popescu, in recent years, being able to play at a similar level. Playing career It was the Romanian Apolzan who first played as sweeper, while at Steaua București. However, Apolzan played during the darkest period in the history of Romania, when the connections with the outside world were almost cut completely. Apolzan signed his first contract with Şoimii, a local team from Sibiu, in 1941. After the war he joins the squad of CFR Bucharest and then between 1949 and 1962, he played for Steaua București until his retirement. The 1961–62 Cupa României was the 24th edition of Romania's most prestigious football cup competition. The title was won by Steaua București against Rapid București. Format The competition is an annual knockout tournament. In the first round proper, two pots were made, first pot with Divizia A teams and other teams till 16 and the second pot with the rest of teams qualified in this phase. Each tie is played as a single leg. First round proper matches are played on the ground of the lowest ranked team, then from the second round proper the matches are played on a neutral location. If a match is drawn after 90 minutes, the game goes in extra time, and if the scored is still tight after 120 minutes, then a replay will be played. In case the game is still tight after the replay, then the team from lower division will qualify for the next round.
