Boxing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Bantamweight
The bantamweight competition was the third-lowest weight class featured in amateur boxing at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and was held at the Workers Indoor Arena. Bantamweights were limited to a maximum of 54 kilograms in body mass. Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. Both semifinal losers were awarded bronze medals, so no boxers competed again after their first loss. Bouts consisted of four rounds of two minutes each, with one-minute breaks between rounds. Punches scored only if the white area on the front of the glove made full contact with the front of the head or torso of the opponent. Five judges scored each bout; three of the judges had to signal a scoring punch within one second for the punch to score. Washington Luís da Silva (born February 25, 1976, in Diadema, São Paulo) is a Brazilian amateur boxer best known to participate in the 2004 Olympics and qualifying for 2008 at light-heavyweight. Bastir Samir (born May 19, 1989) is a Ghanaian boxer who won silver in the welterweight division at the 2007 All-Africa Games. He qualified for the Olympics 2008 in the light-heavyweight division. Career Samir is the brother of bantamweight Issa Samir and is the team captain of Ghana's national team ''Black Bombers''. He won the African Championships in the welterweight division in May 2007. Andranik Hakobyan ( hy, Անդրանիկ Հակոբյան, born 6 October 1981 in Vagharshapat, Armenian SSR) is a Swiss amateur boxer with Armenian roots. He is a World Cup winner, World silver medalist and two-time Olympian. Biography Andranik Hakobyan was born on 6 October 1981. Hakobyan participated at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He won in the first round of the Olympic tournament, but lost in the second. In late 2008, Andranik got the right to compete at the 2008 Boxing World Cup in Moscow. Bradley Saunders (born 4 February 1986) is a British professional boxer. As an amateur he won a silver medal in the light welterweight division at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, gold at the 2009 EU Championships and bronze at the 2007 World Championships. Idel Torriente Leal (born September 9, 1986) is a Cuban amateur boxer who won the Pan American featherweight title 2007 and qualified for the Olympics. Career In 2006 the southpaw beat teenage star Roniel Iglesias in the semis of the bantamweight national championships but lost the final to superstar Guillermo Rigondeaux 4:13.
