Boxing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Light Welterweight
The light welterweight amateur boxing competition was the median weight class at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The competition was held at the Workers Indoor Arena. Light welterweights were limited to a maximum of 64 kilograms in body mass. Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. Both semifinal losers were awarded bronze medals, so no boxers competed again after their first loss. Bouts consisted of four rounds of two minutes each, with one-minute breaks between rounds. Punches scored only if the white area on the front of the glove made full contact with the front of the head or torso of the opponent. Five judges scored each bout; three of the judges had to signal a scoring punch within one second for the punch to score. The winner of the bout was the boxer who scored the most valid punches by the end of the bout. Amateur Boxing
Amateur boxing is a variant of boxing practiced at the collegiate level, at the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games, as well as many associations. Amateur boxing bouts are short in duration, comprising three rounds of three minutes in men, and four rounds of two minutes in women, each with a one-minute interval between rounds. Men's senior bouts changed in format from four two-minute rounds to three three-minute rounds on January 1, 2009. This type of competition prizes point-scoring blows, based on number of clean punches landed, rather than physical power. Also, this short format allows tournaments to feature several bouts over several days, unlike professional boxing, where fighters rest several months between bouts. Gyula Káté (born February 3, 1982 in Budapest, Hungary) is a Hungarian amateur boxer best known for winning two bronze medals at European Championships and one at the World Championships. Serik Sapiyev
Serik Sapiyev ( kk, Серік Жұманғалиұлы Сәпиев, born November 16, 1983) is an amateur boxer from Kazakhstan who won the world title in the light welterweight (-64 kg) division in 2005 and 2007 and Olympic Gold 2012 at welterweight. Egidijus Kavaliauskas
Egidijus Kavaliauskas (born June 29, 1988) is a Lithuanian professional boxer who challenged for the WBO welterweight title in 2019. At regional level, he held the WBC– NABF welterweight title from 2017 to 2019 and the WBO Inter-Continental welterweight title in 2018. As an amateur, he represented Lithuania at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, and won a bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships. Bradley Saunders (born 4 February 1986) is a British professional boxer. As an amateur he won a silver medal in the light welterweight division at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, gold at the 2009 EU Championships and bronze at the 2007 World Championships.
